I expect that there is a source for BP in Tidewater but if not, Bob Moates Sporting Goods in Midlothian (Richmond) Va normally has it in stock.

Thanks coot i will surely give moates a call. The only place i have found it around here is bobs gunshopand i bought the last twoo cans of 3f he had ,and he dont carry 4f,guess i will b priming with 3f... lol

It's good of you to point out that if some real black powder is loaded into the barrel first with the Pyrodex main charge poured on top of it, Pyrodex or the other synthetic black powders will work.

On the other hand we constantly get complaints from people saying their pan prime doesn't flash and if it does it doesn't set off the main powder charge in the barrel.

In almost every case, they have loaded the gun and primed the pan with a synthetic black powder.

Without real black powder in the pan and under a synthetic black powder in the barrel, these modern substitute powders just don't work worth a damn in a flintlock.

I beg to differ. i have used Pyrodex in my flintlock with no problem. I just put 5 grains of 4f in first.

i would strongly recomend avoiding fake stuff in flintlocks!

i wish someone in my state sold real BP but sadley the onley method i have is ordering online. i just got 10 pounds of KIK from powder inc via fedex a couple days ago. with online sources available i cant imagine why any one would use the fake stuff unless they lived someplace that those sites wont ship too.

When I started using flintlocks, I started by duplexing Pyrodex and BP.
It did not take long to realize that, if I had to use BP to make the Pyrodex fire, I might as well use straight BP and lose the Pyrodex.
BP was less expensive, loading was less complicated, clean up was the same or easier.

Matt, ya just need to come over to this side of the state if you want to buy BP in a store. But at the prices they charge, if you can afford a bulk order online it will be cheaper.
I paid $22.99 for my last pound of powder at the White Elephant.

Matt:There are or used to be 2 places west of the mountains to get real black,a boat shop on 101 in Shelton and the muzzle loading shop on River Road in Puyallup. But at $30.per lb mailorder is the only way.Our club gets together and orders a couple of cases.Usually around $15 that way. There are a couple of clubs up your way.Check the WSMA website for contact info.If you want to drive to Portland there are places that sell it there.

5# of mixed F from mainepowderhouse just cost me $119/shipped. at a tad less than $24/#, some folks would argue "too much!" ... but given my location, and the lack of bp within sane driving distance, i got off purty cheap, i'd say. ain't gonna get better for powder or most anything to do with objects that go "bang!" these trying dayze. ymmv.

in reply to coot . Thank you sir for your information on moates spoting goods in midlothian va. i drove up there today and got his last can of 4f and some other stuff. Pretty good shopand he took my phone # and will call me when he gets some more in, Thanks again bud....... lawman

I have heard of those who do this. I have also heard of the occasional accident that winds up causing injury. Not sure it is really worth the trouble.

I am going to learn to make my own and not rely on others.

reloading using black and smokeless powder in both ml and cf rifles is one thing, making any kinda powder from scratch is yet a whole 'nother thing.

have good medical insurance, then make sure you have yer last will and testament made out, 'cause yer entering very very dangerous territory and you better have a crystal clear focus on what yer doing and why.

I pay $23/# at the store here in northern CA for Goex so no, I wouldn't say you paid too much. I'd need to order 10# to be ahead. I really don't fancy the idea of 10# in my garage.....
