Someone here provided me with this image of a powder horn form, for rounding the mouths of horns. I believe there were measurements included, but I forgot to write them down. Could the original poster of the photo, or anyone else provide me with diameters, degree of taper, or other pertinent information? I'm feelin' kinda lazy and don't want to reinvent the wheel right now. Thanks.

:surrender: I guess I'm the guilty party.........I posted that picture a while back.
I've since re-worked it because I found one end wasn't small enough for a paticular horn that I was working on.
Over all lenght = 6"
Large end = 2-1/4" tapering to 2-3/4" over 3"
Small end (now)= 1-3/4" tapering to 2-1/8" over 3"

Hope this helps

Soggy told ya right with the 2nd measurements.Have a big cone on one end and a small one on the other, that way you can do two different sizes of horns with one "tool"

Thanks, Soggy, that's the kind of information I remembered, in general. I just couldn't remember the specifics of it. I'll have to put the info into a text file to go with the picutre. My neighbor has a Shopsmith that can be set up as a lathe. I thought the two of us could make a mold, if we had some good dimensions to start with. I'll glue-up some lumber and get ready to go.

I've heard tell, you can use an old wood baseball bat and cut it down at whatever diameter you need.

get them pretty cheap at "good will marche'"

That sizer is made from some local pine and seems to work pretty good.
One thing that I do is to wrap the cone with a piece of cellopane (sp?) (piece of bread bag is good) before I insert it in the horn. This seems to help release the horn after it cools. I'm thinking that the horn shrinks a little bit as it cools and sometimes it is hard to get the sizer out.
Your results may vary...........

The stretchers I've made are 4" at the base tapering to point about 5" out. The Selby book I believe says 4" base tapering to 2". Not having a lathe. I hack and file mine out of firewood. Work ok, not perfectly round tho.

A tap with a rawhide mallet usually helps pop the sizer out or sometimes I use my shop air compressor with a nozzle to get the stuborn one's out!.... Woiks for me!

This is one application where using old fashioned Waxed Paper is about ideal. It won't stick to either the horn, or the form. Or, you might spray the casting form with Pam, or grease it before putting it into the horn, too.

I usually don't attempt to shape the end of the horn at all. I cut my butt plug to the shape of the horn and then taper it. Once it's hammered into the butt of the horn it just stays there.

I do like that baseball bat idea though! :)
