Powder Horn question

Yeah I’m going to ask about powder horns after I order it . I just ordered a Cureton antique deluxe large from powder horns and more. It asked right carry vs left. I’m right handed , so I picked right side carry. But honestly don’t know what it was truly asking. Is a large horn what I would want for range use ? Thanks. Newbie here. Wardawg.

Cow horns curve to the right or left. Depends on the side of the cow it was on. If you wear your horn on the right then you need a right handed horn because the natural curve of the horn will curve around your body making it more convenient and easier to carry. Same goes for the left side. And just because you are right handed doesn't mean you will wear it on the right side. Some guys prefer the opposite side. So that question isn't are you right or left handed. It is will you wear the horn on the right or left.

In the large horn, depends on how much you plan to shoot. A large horn holds a tremendous amount of powder. I don't know that many guys would run out from a large horn in a few range sessions. I prefer small and medium horns so it boils down to how much powder you want to carry.

Thanks for explanation. I got the large. It’s listed ( I believe ) to be 4” longer than the curation medium. Wardawg

It is my understanding that early powder horns (pre-1800) tended to be quite large (13+ inches), and extended well past the left and right edges of the rifle bag. Later powder horns became shorter.

I am not 100% sure of that transition date, perhaps someone with more knowledge can chime in.

Independent of the historical time period, large horns are no bad. Especially if you're shooting all day. During a long day of shooting a .50 cal, I have to refill my powder horn at least once.

Sometimes I wish that I had a larger horn. (THAT'S NOT A FREUDIAN SLIP, GET YOUR MINDS OUT OF THE GUTTER.)

Well said. Large OK for range use. If a full large horn is used for hunting the unnecessary weight when carrying can become a nuisance. That is why many/most experienced ml'ers who hunt prefer to use what is often called a 'day horn'.
