powder horn sling

Have a small priming horn made without hanging eyes. Is thier a sling that can be made or bought so I can hang around the neck? This one also has a plunger that you dab in the pan to fill. Tom T.

I have seen guys who made a small band out of a strip of thin brass or copper sheet that fits tightly on the throat area of the horn. The bands are about 3/8ths inch wide, length sufficient to wrap around the throat with about 1/2" or so overlap on each end. The overlap on each end was bent up 90 degrees from the horn. You drill a hole through the overlap ends and attach a string, leather lacing, or whatever.

As long as you aren't ruining any valuable treasure, you can drive an iron staple in the plug for attaching lacing or sling to the butt end.

If ya got enought horn, cut a rabbet around the throat and tie yer neck lace there.

i got a question from a picture i saw can ribbon work for a sling ite would be tied like a sash i think thanks

I use a clove hitch to tie leather lace around the neck of my powder horn. It is very easy to tie this knot, and it stays tight.

How funny, never thought of that. It makes too much sense. Used the clove hitch to start twine for lashing poles together. Easy to tie, easy to pry apart, and stays put unless you purposely pick it apart. I'll have to give it a try on another powder horn.

Originally tried to just tie the leather lace around the groove and finish with a square knot, but it never held the lace tightly enough into the groove. Kept slipping out. Currently I've just looped the leather around a groove in the horn and used some artificial sinew to wrap the two ends together tightly enough to keep the lace in the groove. Works great. Got the idea from seeing some thin brass clamps used on a horn I got from Townsend.

Clove hitch... too simple.

If you want it a little more complicated, use the clove hitch and then tie the free ends with an overhand knot. It looks like a square knot when finished, but holds much better.

There's another advantage to the clove hitch. You can use the free-hanging end of lace to attach your powder measure. :thumbsup:
