I might be missing something here, but....if you fit the tapered plug into the tapered hole PROPERLY its not going to fall out faster if its beautiful or not. If it fits right, it stays in. I've never lost one. Ever. Same as wedge keys. They either fit or they are just plain wrong.
Okay, go ahead and take my head off for pointing it out. :stir:

My plug has a hole drilled in it and is tied to the horn with a thin piece of leather. At least I won't lose the plug. Now some powder, that is another thing.

I believe you are missing the hint of sarcasm and fatalism implied in the likelihood that something nice gets ruined or lost before something not so nice. Maybe it holds true for some of us more than others, as someone who can't shake Mr. Murphy and his laws for love or money, I completely understand this concept.

I have tried that. The little loop has a way of finding branches and pulling the plug out. You may not lose the plug but and empty horn when you need to reload is..... :cursing:

I've found my own solution. I rub a thin layer of beeswax onto the peg every year or two. Just enough "tack" to keep it from moving around, but free and easy when you pull it. I agree that the little loop of line or leather to secure the peg to the horn is an invitation for brush. That's a big consideration in our wet climate.
