Hello, just got my raw horns in today and cannot wait to start on them. My book on makeing acc. just says to scrap the horn with glass or knife blade but was wondering do you go from the tip down or from the bottom to the tip? Or does it matter. And I have seen some horns that the tip end is black do they dye this or how do they get them that dark? Or do you have anyother tips or tricks you could share on building my first horn. I want to thank everyone for all the great info I have gotten here I posted a question in the builders bench about darkening a stock and it turned out great. This is by far the friendliest form I have been on.

bowfish: I believe the dark tips are a result of the breed of the cow/bull it came off of.
The only thing I know about raw horns is you don't want to cook them in your house. In fact, you should wait for a breezy day when the breeze is blowing towards a neighbor you don't like much.

Once you boil it and the horn get soft, you can shape or carve it...

Here is a few fine example of altered powder horns, enjoy...

Some are naturally dark at the tip and some are stained.
Staining horns is an art in its self. Here's several that I've made.
