I'll pass along one insight from wet country, and I think it's borne out here and there in historic accounts:

Powder gets wet, even in horns.

Several buds up here have "taught" the rest of us not to carry horns full of powder exposed to the elements on your body. Plugs pop out in the brush, a great big old water drop falls from your hat brim into the nozzle of a horn while you're loading, guys fall in creeks, guys fall asleep laying on the ground without realizing their horn is in a nearby puddle, guys get down on their knees or bellies to stalk through wet grass and brush, the best waterfowl hunting is in the nastiest weather.... The list goes on and on.

The lesson is, only put as much powder in your horn as you're willing to foul.

Sure, carry extra with you in some dry place. But don't go foolishly putting all your eggs in one basket in the wet times. :nono:

Your experiences are typical. While people did get three score and ten, or four score, things that we fix or medicate for were killers. High blood pressure, type 2 diabetiecs, angina or chf, renal or liver problems put one in the ground. 50-60 saw a lot our best know people in the grave. An otherwise healthy soul would die of a minor infection, or even a broken bone. A walk around a pre 1930s cemetery show a lot more less then 50 then over 50.

Not to mention guys like me. At age 77 I just had a quintipule (that's 5) artery by-pass surgery. If not for that, the average age would be lowered at bit. Now, I'm looking forward to more years and raising the average.
And, btw, my ronny and hunting horns are kept full between uses. Hang on my side while shooting.
Yesterday's plastic, still as good as anything today.

Rapid recovery and good health, Rifleman1776. Good to have you back.

I fill my horn, leave it until it's almost empty and then fill it again.

It's worked for 30 years.
