I am assuming there are different levels of quality here. How do I find a good reliable one w/o breaking the bank? Thanks.

I would visit the "Photo" and "Craftsmen" forums, check out what people have posted and see if theres anything you like. Then its easy to contact anyone via pt or email.

You can find decent originals for $25-50. Some even come with powder. :shocked2:

Try ebay.

Just be real careful with an ebay horn, theres a fella on there what does his cookie cutter scrimshaw with a DREMEL! Study the pics and ask questions. Occasionally you'll run into a good 'un, but not from the cookie cutter guy!
And try to get one from a builder or a buckskinner, not an "estate sale dealer" These yahoos don't know the first thing about horns.

There are quite a few "horners" on this site.
All one needs to do is ask and/or send them a private topic message!
A few of them have already replied to your post! (HINT)
you can expect to pay anywhere from 75 to 250 and up for a nice horn. figure the time put into one of these. You are not buying function perse', but art!

bags and gun builders work the same way here!

i've ben looking for a buffalo horn to make my own powder horn for our woodswalk shoot. who sale's buffalo horns or does anyone sale a powder horn made from a american buffalo? also is it harder to make a powder horn from buffalo rather than cow horn?

No I meant real antique horns on ebay. Nice, plain, original horns. Some of those ebay butt-skinner horns are pretty bad.

Griz does make nice reproductions... good prices too.

Since people in a hurry don't shoot muzzle loaders, I suggest a trip to friendship or any of the larger rendezvous and check the trade blankets.
