We all know lead has gone sky high but I was surprised to see powder has gone up quite a bit as well. The best price I've found for Goex was $11.85 per pound delivered in 25 pound lots. In 10 pound lots the price goes up to $14.90! Those prices include the haz-mat fee. I haven't ordered powder for several years, 25 pounds lasts a while, but was shocked at the price increase. Anyone know where to find a better price? :shake:

Considering retail is usually close to $20 the 14.90 is still good. The hazmat fee is a set price regardless of 5 or 25 pounds. Try to find others and split the 25lb. case.

Bass Pro sell it here for 21.99#, obviously I dont buy it there. I order mine by the case or 2.

We can buy Goex from the local Goex Dist. for $8.00 per. Lb. in Bulk. That is 25 Lbs. in a bag inside a box. You can put it in 1 lb, cans if you like.

where can you get 8.00 per lb in bulk? I would put it in mason jars until I had enough, I would guess I hope that Glass is a safe way to store bp?

Please do tell where you are getting this price??? All us enquiring minds need to know!!! :hmm:

My local Gander doesn't even carry black powder.

I don't even have a local Gander Mountain. The only shop in town that used to carry Goex wanted $28 a lb. for it. I don't know if they even sell it anymore. I was buying mine at gun shows, until the nice folks here told me about Powder Inc., and I ordered 25 lbs.

I just got 25 pounds of bulk for $9.00 a pound from the distributer here in Wyoming. That is without shipping and Hazmat charges. It has to be picked up at the distributer. Redwing lives in the same town as the distributer and is bringing it to a shoot next weekend for me.

BassPro is the only place I'm able to find real black powder locally, the last time I bought Goex there it was $20/lb. It wasn't the price that bothered me, I got tired of being told that the Goex I wanted was called Pinnacle and it was "on shelf" near the Pyrodex. Inevitably, the guy I would be dealing with was not one of the privileged few who knew that Goex's real black powder was kept elsewhere in some sort of powder safe.

It's easier and a little cheaper to order 5lbs at a time from Grafs.

anyone know if you can safely store powder in glass mason jars? I do not want to blow myself up until I get 25 empty goex cans. I do not think glass holds a static charge.

They use it for insulators on telephone poles so I think it should be alright. I would keep them out of direct sunlight because they can heat up like a greenhouse. Dunno if it would be enough to set it off.

Ive got about forty empty KIK and GOEX cans setting around. Filling those should keep me off the streets for a morning.

Yes, Keep the jars out of direct sunlight, and keep them cool, and you can store the powder in glass jars. Transfer the powder to used powder cans when you can for transfers to the range. The cans are better means of storage, as they are totally opaque, and are not easily affected by heat, either.

Slow on the reply what about the old blue glass mason jars or brown chemical jars that are totally cleaned out, The humidity levels fluctuate so much in my basement in the Fall and Spring. I hope to go in on a 25 lb lot of powder with a few other people.

YOu may have to invest in some new rubber seals for canning jars, but they are relatively cheap, and are available at grocery stores, and hardware stores that sell the canning jars. You want to seal moisture out of the powder, and then store the jars in a cool dark, DRY place. If your basement is damp, its not the place to store powder, unless you take steps to isolate the jars from the moist air. You can put the jars in zip lock bags, for instance, to keep out the moisture. Buy some dessicant packs at a hobby shot, or at some hardward and home improvement stores, to use inside the bags to absorb any moister that gets into the bags. A 2 quart bag can hold a couple of quart size jars.

If you have access to one of the vacuum machines for putting plastic over things, and sucking out the air before the bag is sealed, you can use that to seal the jars from air individual, or in a group.

good call on the "silica do not eat" packs I have some two quart and gallon mason jars that We do not can in.

My Gander Mountain(Charleston WV) says they do not carry Black, only substitutes?.....Mike
