That is an excellent black powder. I cannot see the f rating. But whether 1f .2f, 3f or 4f it is usable in the
black powder pursuit of the sport. The claim of this manufacturer is to have prepared a special
charcoal that burns cleaner and more consistently when compounded into the black powder
formulation. Goex has produced a great premium powder called Olde Eynsford (OE) to compete
with Swiss, again based upon the premium charcoal ingredient. You can absolutely tell the
difference between a good average powder and the premium powders. The Goex OE is a great
powder, more affordable than Swiss, and while I have not compared the two powders by
loads and Chrono-- I believe that the Goex OE compares well with Swiss at the better price
and is made in the USA.

Thank you, Mr. Lincoln. I was wondering what the diff was between Goex and OE. Being a relative noob to all this I was just happy to have found some stock of OE and bought it not knowing it's "the good stuff".

Bugtrucker:

IMO, GOEX which is an American black powder is very good powder. Schuetzen powder is very similar to GOEX with both of them considered to be general purpose firearm powder.
Both of these powders are good choices for just about any shooting a person would want to do.

Swiss powder is sometimes considered to be a "sporting" powder because it is more powerful than regular GOEX or Schuetzen.
The GOEX company decided to come out with a "sporting" powder of their own and in doing so, they created Old Eynsford. Old Eynsford seems to be as powerful as Swiss powder.

If you are trying to buy any black powder at a local gun store you need to know that black powder cannot be displayed on the shelf like other powders.
It must be locked up in a Federally approved storage locker.
Because of this, the clerks in the store might not know that their store actually has real black powder so, ask to speak to the store owner or manager and ask them about it.

Black powder is considered to be an explosive so if it is shipped a additional "hazardous material" charge will usually be charged if you buy the powder on line and have it shipped to you. This can be quite expensive but the same payment will cover any shipment from 1 pound to 50 pounds.

As an aside, I'm moving this thead to the Shooting Accessories area. That's where we talk about powders/balls/bullets etc.

Swiss is also reported to burn a little cleaner than Goex. Personally, I don't shoot well enough to detect a difference on paper between them, (and justify the cost differential) but a lot of guys do.

Reportedly, according to Pletch, their Null-B powder is the fastest in the pan for priming. Faster than 4Fg by a couple of milliseconds. Again, probably not enough of a difference to notice with your scores.

Swiss is great powder...I burn about 10 pounds a year in my unmentionable rifles shooting at steel critters. Burns cleaner than Goex.

Swiss is about the finest sporting powder commonly available with Goex OE being in a virtual tie. Swiss is too costly for my budget but OE is in the ballpark. Still, for day-in, day-out shooting regular Goex and similar powders are excellent.

Ya hanshi, for years all that mattered was having "some powder" to last the season.
Now with people worried and over-buying we are all paying more attention to powder
and the details surrounding it. In these forums we split hair on powders and enjoy
commenting on them. In reality, when we shoot just about any black powder and
witness the power of it, our doubts tend to vanish. Of course, we want the best for
our money and Swiss is wonderful as is the GOEX OE for our reserve stocks. But for
ringing steel , just making smoke or hunting, old plain GOEX is fine. And the Graf's house brand
is now supplied by GOEX at reduced prices. People split hairs with chronographs and
such, but in reality the power of Black Powder is to be highly respected. I for one would
not want to be the backstop for a ball powered by any dry Black Powder out there.
