I've got a powderhorn I am working on and while cuting the base off square I noticed the inside of the horn had like a membrane skin that was a little loose so I tried to peel it all out. What was loose all around the inside of the base was tighter up inside. I tried a screwdriver going all around, tried twisting it with some needle nose pliers. Now I've got a big birdnest of it up in the neck that I can't figure how to get out. Any suggestions?

If it's the same stuff I ran into, the solution was pretty easy. I let it soak a little while in hot water, then went at it with a bottle brush. Came right out.

:hmm: Sounds like maybe your horn inter layer has either part of the core membrane still in it or wall seperation. I think that I would try boiling the horn in water for quite awhile (1 hour) or so, then take a sharp knife and try to scrape our the mass of inter horn fiber. After taking out of the hot water. The mass should be soft and plyable enough to get removed. May take a little effort, but if it's a nice horn...well worth the trouble! GOOD LUCK...Rick

...To keep the wife happy.....

do that boiling outside if at all possible.
....and in a pot she dont cook in!

...ask me how I know!

If the boiling and scraping doesn't do it, try a dremel with a sanding drum. If you have a flexible shaft attachment you can get pretty far into the cavity.Be careful you dont go through the horn from the inside! :shocked2:

The boiling made it a little better but the stuff still hung on. I ended up grinding the loops off of a pair of hemostats and duck taping a couple of chopsticks to it as handle extentions. I clamped it on the strings and twisted it till they came loose. Didn't get all of them but the ones left are pretty stiff so I think they will be alright.
