I made one that holds four balls but I am going to make another because I see where I can improve it for hunting. First question for whitetail deer hunting how many balls do you think it should hold, I am thinking one or two. On this one I am going to make it hold the correct amount of powder for hunting with 45 cal. Second question should I make it hold the #11 caps also.

The .45 caliber ball holder in this photo came with the shirt I bought at a gun show.
It has a brass .45 cartridge built into it to serve as a powder measure. The cartridge internal length is 1.85 which would hold about 74 grains of powder.
There is no hole for a lanyard so I think it was stored in a shooting pouch.

How many to hold? One. You might want one quick reload, but all and all if red coats, Yankees or Blackfoots aren’t charging you you have plenty of time to reload. I have found after a shot you take a seat, smoke en if you got them, wipe your bore and reload. Then go look for your deer.
I think ball boards are older then they are credited, but it’s not something we need today.
They are handy and look neat. They fit with a ml, and it gives you a fun little toy. I like a five hole since it gives you a sting to shoot if your at a range or in a competition you don’t loose count.

Don't know anyone that ever got a second shot...and hit the deer.
I carried one for years....Never used it. To cumbersome....A speed loader works better or a paper cartridge....But Like a friend of mine did...He dropped his speed loader cause he was all excited....spilled all the powder...I find it's best to just relax and reload normally.
My hunting reload board holds 2 PRB's, has 2 powder containers, a shortened ball starter, and a small pouch to hold a small priming flask. I have yet to fire a second shot at a deer, but I guess it is because I am picky about the shots I take at live game. I do reload after shooting a deer, just in case the first would is not fatal, and a finisher is needed.

Not a mater of patience. A shot deer is going to try and get away from danger. Then it’s going to be in pain and then in shock. Flight/ fight response is going to kick in. If it’s up and hears you it’s going to give it’s all to get away. On the other hand if it hears noting in pursuit it’s going to lay down. After a few min it won’t get up. Take your time after a shot the deer will not have gone far.
Zonie - That's is a cool idea for a measure and ball board.. 2 balls would be good in a pouch.. And yes I have had a second shot at a deer.. 4x4 mule deer buck. 30yds shot over top. Just stood there reload and got him.. My son is a witness.. When he tells the story his last comment is ''I never saw the old man shoot twice'' .. To be mortal :redface:

Bout 25 yrs ago I shot a cow elk. It never looked up or stopped grazing? The rest of the heard also didnt look up? I stepped behind a huge pine and reloaded with shaking hands spillin a goodbit of powder wondering how in the world I could have missed, using the tree as rest etc? I slowly brought up the rifle, set the set trigger and noted she was starting to wobble, then she went down? Wierd. I COULD HAVE got the second shot off though?

I practice the same thing, thanks. My hunting uncle...my Uncle Bill (though his name was Millard :wink: ) and his hunting buddy Lonny Thomas taught me not to hurry. They were a Bugler and a Prince Albert guy in that order. They'd reload and sit the rifles and horns aside and roll a quirley (old cowboy term for hand rolled cigarette) and smoke them before starting out. I bet 99% of the time the deer would be down in less than 150 yards if they'd run at all. Lonne also taught me how to gently use brand new kittens to call coyotes. Ok I made another quick load ball starter that holds one ball and up to 120 grains of powder. It is made out of black walnut the board goes up to any side of the octagon barrel and will be centered over the rifle bore. I made a hickory ball starter to go with it. I am trying to figure out how to make it hold one #11 cap.
Can add a simple leather fob to the bullet board, with holes punched in it, holes sized tight enough to hold a few caps individually.

45 years ago I hunted in MA. When you waited for a deer to lay down and stiffen up you would in another 30-35 minutes find a gut pile and drag trail to a road with your deer gone.
