I may have a chance to trade for a 300th anniversary O/U Beretta 12 guage. If I get it I would like to load the top barrel with round ball and the bottom with shot for grouse.

I've never owned a smooth bore so I don't know how This will work. Has anyone hunted deer with a 12 guage using RB and if so what advice can you give me.

Thanks.

All I can tell ya is My Beretta of long ago shot a ball real well. Go for it, you'll be fine.

That is until your rammer breaks! Make a replacement from a carbon arrow! That's what I did

If a carbon arrow shaft shatters, it can cause a real mess if it goes into your hand, arm, etc. The carbon shards are worse than fiberglass and the splinters may not be able to be completely removed.

I think a different material would be a better choice.

If you crash your car on the way to your best hunting ground you could get hurt, consider walking instead :youcrazy:
Never broke mine bud  Just don't use it as a battering ram!

Oh....and don't run up stairs!

Thanks for the tip. I've used the 50 and 54 rifles but have never been around any smooth bore. Most shots where I hunt are well inside one hundred yards.

I did have to turn some brass though to make the new ends for the new rammer etc.
A good wood would do if carving is only available as it is for me now, not having access to a lathe any more!

Sure, load whatever in either barrel. I own a Beretta O/U percussion shotgun and love it.

I can shoot o'hand both barrels w/PRB within 12" at 50 yds. Acceptable, given there are no sights other than the front bead and I'm a lousy o'hand shooter. I think my gun has fairly-well collimated barrels, thus both upper and lower shoot mostly at the same point-of-impact.

The issue with these really fine shotguns is the lower barrel has a long flash channel and can misfire if not clear.

Having tried the magnum caps, and the musket nipple/cap combo, the clear clean channel makes the most reliable lower barrel. I've used a fizz can of brake drum cleaner down the breach/channel after removing the nipple. Fire 3 to 5 caps, then try about 20grs BP (no wadding, fire into the air), to be certain the lower barrel will fire.

You now have a sweet shotgun with your choice of PRB and/or shot in either or both barrels.

I put an old T/C primative rear sight addapter with a simple dovetail leaf and a turtle type front sight on mine. The barrels shot within two
inches of each other at 50 yds. That being said, the barrels are rather thin walled for a 12 ga. You can't load it like a Bess.
