I have been using pre-lubed patches. Is there any advantage or disadvantage using these? I have been keeping them in small zip-lock bags to keep them from drying out. What kind of lube is best if I were to lube my own? Thanks

I don't see an advantage or disadvantage in using a pre-cut patch. I use pre-cuts that I cut and lube with T/C Bore Butter in my bullet blocks...

Probably the biggest advantage one would get on cutting the patch at the muzzle is that it will always be a perfect patch/ball load in the bore. I use spit for this patch...

I have never really noticed any difference in accuracy in either way of loading, so it's really up to the shooter and what system they feel works best for them.

Advantage: One less item to carry afield (lube)

Disadvantage: You don't have many choices of the lube unless you but unlubed patches and pre-lube them yourself...

I've used both .015" precut/prelubed cotton patches with Oxyoke's name on them, and .018" precut/prelubed pillow ticking patches with TC's name on them.
For me the .018" pillow ticking tightens my groups a little and being thicker they seem to carry more lube, so they're all I use...so IMO:

Advantages:
High quality control, shot-to-shot consistency, easy to find & order year in and year out, convenience, etc...one less thing I have bother doing in order to enjoy shooting my muzzleloaders.

Disadvantages:
None for me

Just got back from running 40 of them through a .54cal flinter at the range

Advantages:

Convenience, ease of use, requires less stuff in your hunting pouch.

Disadvantages:

Requires more care to center, cost, freshness (new vs. old & dried-out will throw to different point on target), you must find a way to carry the patches without picking up grunge or messing up other gear (only a problem if you're trying for authenticity).

PC or not, I carry mine on hunts in an empty percussion cap can. A friend who worries more about looks made a small drawstring pouch from deer skin. He keeps it oiled for waterproofing and hangs it just inside his bag so he doesn't have to hunt for it. I use them because they take up less space and are sure convenient, as well as consistent.

I carry pre-lubed patches in an empty percussion cap tin in my hunting bag. Carry some extra cleaning patches in an Altoids (yes, the curiously strong peppermints)tin in the hunting bag. The paper in the Altoids tin syas made since 1780-something or other, so :imo: you could carry pre-lubed patches in an Altoid tin for a flintlock and be PC! ::

I use the OxYoke dry pillow tick patches and lube them myself with T/C Bore Butter. If you run hot water over the Bore Butter tube for a bit the lube will pour right out.

I also use the OxYoke Pre-Lubed wonder wads. Underneath the patch and ball. Very good accuracy.

I load everything (Wad, Patch and Ball) into 10-round loading blocks that I made.
In one "chamber" of the loading block I'll fill with wads as I load the wad over the powder first, the other chambers will hold the centered patch and ball until ready for use.

Very easy loading for hunting/field use. To replenish the loading blocks I store in my pouch about a dozen or so extra wads, lubed patches and balls in a small "o" ring Plano Waterproof fishing storage box. I also use a tiny waterproof box for extra caps.

Any unused patch/ball/wads in the loading blocks are easily removed and the lubed patches and wads long term stored in ziplock bags.

Works great for me!

I use Sagebrush pre-lubed patches. The Possible Shop stocks them in .005 .010. .015. They are on the oily side which really helps when loading a fouled bore. I use the .010 with a .530 ball.
