I prime the pan with the only powder horn that I carry. FFFg goes into the barrel for the main charge and then a small amount goes into the pan. One horn means fewer things to carry and possibly lose while in the woods. Ounces make pounds, pounds make pain.
 
I generally use a brass priming charger with 4f Swiss, on a lanyard around my neck(with a tiny brush and vent hole pick). I generally shoot 2f in my .50 cal. I can and have shot 3f from it, and have primed from the horn with 3f. I notice a bigger lag going from 3f to 2f than from 4f to 3f, so I dont prime with 2f.
