I had what I thought was a fouled and pitted 62 caliber barrel. I asked you guys several questions, thinking I needed to lap the barrel, since I had scrubed the heck out of it in every way I could think of. Luckily I read about using the poor boy scrub pad method. At first it didn't seem to work very well. But last night I bit the bullet and wrapped more strands around the brass brush, making it so tight that it took all my strength to push it into the barrel, and I'm not a weak guy. Presto! The barrel is now smooth, clean, and shiny, like a new barrel! It was just fouling.
I'm relieved that I didn't cast a lead plug and try to lap it. As for what I thought was wrong, the old saying comes to mind "When you hear hoof beats think horses not zebras."
