Hi everyone
I am new here I hail from the far off island of Malta.
I am attempting to make some replica powder horns but I cannot get rid of these unsightly blood marks. Any tips about ploishing and finishing are also welcome.

Um....not to hijack your thread but what's wrong with it the way it is? Gives it character from my point of view. It is my understanding though that scraping the outside and then using various grades of steel wool to remove the scraper marks and buff the horn gives satisfactory results for the outside.

If those blood stains go all the way thru the horn, it's going to be hard to impossible to remove them. You may be able to bleach them out but I have never done such a thing.

Thanks guys, they dont go right through the horn though :hmm:

cheers

How about a wood bleach? Do not know if that would work in this case or not! :hmm:

Put them out in the open sun (of which you have plenty there in Malta) for a while, methinks said spots will darken up.

censu,
In my own personal opinion I would leave
them in. Its a natural appearence, is my
thinking, but of course that is just me :hmm:
snake-eyes :hatsoff:
BTW welcome to the MLF, you just may be the first from Malta.

Thanks Guys for all the input, Yes I think I am the first from Malta!

Try using hydrogen Peroxide to remove the stains. If that doesn't work, try a salt paste, made by mixing salt with a few drops of water. That should break the blood stain down, and pull it out of the horn.

I agree, leave them as they are. I spent a month in Malta in 1967 while my ship was being repaired. It is a lovely island.
