Projectiles for rifled barrels

It doesn't seem right to put a round ball into a rifled barrel. Same as with any other shot that doesn't contact the rifling. So it would seem that cement filled juice cans are not the best choice for rifled barrels. Comments?

A friend of mine has an original Parrott rifled cannon. Has a mould that casts an aluminum missile like projectile with lugs that fit the rifling. I think the mold is available from one of those outfits that deal in cannons and such.

Keep in mind that a full on lead bullet might be too heavy and cause too much pressure depending on your gun. Ive seen guys use a mold that makes a pellet type bullet with the hollow skirt to cut weight.

A friend of mine has an original 2.9” Parrot gun. He cast zinc “bullets” actually called Bolts ie solid shot in the shape of originals. Zinc is almost the same weight as cast iron. They are machined to just fit the bore. They have 3 3/8”-16 bolts cast into the base when the casting is poured. A copper cup with 3 corresponding holes is fastened to the base with nuts. Upon firing the copper cup expands to fill the grooves and impart the spin to the projectile. I hope that made sense.

Disregard the bullet impact in the base. I dug this out of the gun club back stop. It had been shot into the berm about 30 years ago.

I dont know if 2.25” ammo is a avilable but if anyone had it, the Paulson Bros. in Wisconsin would be my first thought.

I just looked at the Paulson Brothers Ordnance Corporation website and the smallest rifle projectile they offer is 2.6”. Casting your own may be your best bet.
