I think this has to be revisited from time to time, to remind others you shouldn't use a hammer and a screwdriver to pull/push out your wedge.
What is the best way to avoid scratches and damage to the wedge and barrel? What do you use, in the shop or in the field?

I use a little wood mallet. You can use the edge of the mallet to push the keeper down if the keeper spring is stiff. If the wedge was installed way too hard, a little brass hammer with a scrap of leather to protect the metal. Works for me and there is no blemish on my Colt.

I made a Colt wedge tool. The wheel weight slides back and forth works like a slide hammer. You use the end without the bolt to tap the wedge flush then use the other end with the brass screw that has been ground flat to push the wedge the rest of the way. At the range it is small enough to fit in your pocket.

That's BRILLIANT! *cue Guinness beer guys clinking bottles* :hatsoff:

I carved a section of nylon toothbrush handle to the right shape with a Stanley knife and tap mine through with a small hammer.

I'll probably continue to use a hammer and screw driver,,,,brute that I am.... :haha:

Hey, Mike, here's a little more force for the really stuck ones (aim carefully, now!):

I usually use the plastic handle on a screwdriver. Wooden ones work too.

Mine usually works with thumb pressure but a plastic handled screwdriver worked just fine when it was new and tight.

The plastic-handled screw driver from the $20.00 set of interchangeable heads with the magnetic tips...works great on the small screws on the revolvers!

Mallet and wooden dowel

Like all the other folk.

If you use a screwdriver, you should be able to knock it out with your hand.
