did a search and after reading for about an hour I still do not have a definitive answer.
I browned a Rice barrel this past friday. It browned until monday.
I took all the solution off and cleaned everything up, steel wooled and coated with oil. As my lock parts are working on the brown, the barrel has been sitting oiled. Today I picked up the barrel and the thing has a fine but definite rust all over it.
I wiped it all off and stell wooled again and covered with oil.
Is this normal?
Should I be worried about it continuing to rust?
if so how do I stop it

Did you wash it off with a solution of baking soda? If you didn't you should of, I would wash it off now with soapy water to remove the oil, then wipe down w/alcohol and then wash it w/baking soda and re-oil.

All of the browning solutions use an acid, chemical salt, or a combination of the two. The acid needs to be neutralized and the salts washed away. For an initial oiling I use 30 weight non-detergent motor oil and re-oil every day for the next few days.

+1 on the baking soda. That will neutralize almost any acid, far as I know.

I use muriatic acid when rust browning, and plain old tap water (lots of it) will neutralize muriatic. Wash it til you're tired, then wash it for a few minutes more. I'll usually steel wool the barrel with warm oil as a lube. I've tried "candling" metal parts, that is, rubbing them with a candle or paraffin block and then washing with a propane torch, to good effect, as well.

Can't see one technique works any better than the other, but they both work.

thanks everyone for the replies.
I did not wash it with baking soda but will tonight, after I clean all the oil off.
How do you make a solution of baking soda?
A paste or a liquid?

Liquid. A cup or so to a gallon of water is plenty. Wipe it down good with this solution and rinse with clean water. Dry it thoroughly. Heat the barrel up with a hair dryer or torch and then oil it heavily with motor oil. Let it cure for a day or so and then clean the motor oil off and apply normal gun oil or whatever you usually use to protect after cleaning.

If you applied oil or wax to the browning it will have to be completely removed for the baking soda to do its job. Any oils or waxes present will keep the soda from getting under the browning.

Use Disk Brake cleaner or acetone to remove the oils/waxes.
If you use acetone, do it outside and don't breath the vapors. They can attack your liver.

Just went through this.....Kill the rusk with amonia or baking soda and THEN...HEAT THE BARREL UP WITh A TORCH. You will see the moisture evaoparte out of the brown/rust. OTHERWISE you are trapping moisture in the brown/rust and just covering it with oil.
Its OK to go back and fix it now....it will turn out just fine!
