I've got a beautiful piece of 2.5 inch thick piece of extremely curly maple that is only 6.5 inches wide. Most of the longrifles I've seen have a steep drop on the butt and would require an 8" piece of wood. Is there a traditional style that I could use get a stock out of this 6.5" piece of wood? Something with a less severe drop?

Get a rifle and lay it on the plank at diffrent angles. You want the grain to run as straight as possible through the wrist. Good Luck AL

I think the Allentown style is fairly straight. You could copy the English sporting rifle style as well.
