Getz barrels are kind of like unicorn horns and hen's teeth now days.

Getz has developed such a reputaion for quality that while they are still producing barrels, there is such a demand that there is a long wait involved in getting one. That's an admirable position to be in! But it may not be good for a maker of parts sets like Chambers. From what I have seen of the quality of all Chambers products, I would not be at all skeptical of whatever barrel maker he reccomends.

I still try to get Getz barrels whenever I can because I like the guys and they make great barrels. Every one is top quality- nothing to mess with. But you could be waiting a while for a custom barrel from John. He's backed up for good reason- demand.

Nearly any of todays barrel makers produce a quality product, so about any barrel Chambers uses will be good.

Can't get better than Getz, Rice, DeHass, or Rayl, but others are good too.
J.D.

The first 4 LRs I built had Getz bbls and later on 2 more and the quality was excellent. From what I hear only John Getz himself is making the bbls resulting in a loooooong wait, if ever. I now use Rice bbls and have found the quality as good as Getz and in a pinch, because of their availability, I use Colerain. Colerain's bores are excellent but the outside requires a lot more draw filing than the Rice......Fred

When you decided to spend the money to have a semi-custom, or home made rifle for yourself, pinching pennies on the barrel is not the best way to save money. The barrel is the heart and sole of any gun, and everything else simply facilitates making it fire in the right direction! Buy the best quality barrel you can afford, and then worry about the cost of the other parts after that. MHO, of course.

This assumes, of course, that you have only one pair of hands, one shoulder and eye that works well enough to aim and shoot a gun, and that whatever gun you are going to build for yourself is the result of careful deliberation and thought on your part on the kind of shooting you want to do with it. My brother has built an Underhammer Chunk Gun, in addition to a left hand flint, and is now building a LH percussion rifle because he has some very fine, NOW TUNED, LH locks he has owned for years that need a barrel for each of them. But he is hunting deer this week with his .45 custom made rifle, with its DeHaas barrel.

You may want to check out if Tip Curtis has the barrel you want. He has quite an inventory including Paris and Green Mtn as well as most of the others. Don't know if he has any Getz barrels in stock.

Paris? Didn't know they were still in production.

Didn't Don and John Getz buy the Paris barrel equipment? Seems like I heard that a long time ago.

Regards, Dave

Yeah, both Getz and Colerain claim heritage from Paris. I have barrels by Getz, Colerain, Rice, old Green River, Longhammock, Rayl, and others--all perform better than I can shoot. We are blessed with a lot of good barrels these days. I have witnessed outstanding groups from plain ol' Green Mountain barrels that friends own. Some of what you hear is hype colored with name brand prejudice/envy....

Tip has some unused barrels in his shop you wouldn't believe..and some used ones too...The Paris barrels are from before they shut down and sold out obviously.

If you have a particular barrel in mind for a gun you want to build.. its worth a call. he might just be able to find it in his inventory.

Again thank for the replies... Still would prefer a GETZ...
You might post a few wanted adds on the various muzzleloading boards, something may turn up. Otherwise you're not going to get a Getz barrel.
