A friend has an old clamp that he's trying to figure out what it might have been used for. We both think it might have some connection to leather work. Anybody have an idea about it?

Leatherworking. Used like a third hand so to speak. The clamp holds the leather to free up the hands? My experience... :hmm:

That's the clamp of a stitching horse! It was mounted on a stand similar to a SAWHORSE where you sit on and hold the leather to stitch. They still make them.

I agree that is more than likely a clamp for a variation of a stitching pony!

Check out this tutorial I googled up. This tutorial is by one of our own.

Yours looks like it may have been made to work on a bench where the base would have been made to lock into a set of adjustable holes.
Similar to bench you have it on with the adjustable peg holes!

It may have even had a seat for the person using it to sit on. Similar to this one.

That one has a different type of lock but the same purpose!

I like the wooden hand made bolt and nut that goes thru it for tension. It even has two holes for adjustment for working different thicknesses of leather!

In our area they are called "harness makers vices". They are used to hold the leather straps whn working with leather. I use mine to hold knife blades when finish shaping handles. :idunno:

I use a stiching horse, and that looks like it fit into a slot (to be removable,) where my clamp is permanantly affixed to the bench.

The entire stitching horse was made from a 2x12, except for the clamp, which was made from plywood.
