I ordered a set of thimbles for a fowler. When they arrived I noticed one was slightly bigger than the rest and it measures at 7/16, the others are 3/8 including the entry pipe. My first thought, the 7/16 thimble was sent by mistake but then I got to thinking...
Were slightly larger upper thimbles ever used for the upper pipe? I ask this because I have a really nice hand made ramrod that tapers into a nice large tip atm, that someone here at these forums made for me. It needs to be trimmed of course but if the 7/16 thimble is used for the upper thimble, the taper would leave more meat on the rod than a 3/8 thimble.
Is this a possibility or was this just not done?
