Question for those in the know.

I have an old T/C Hawken .50 cal. Flinter. I there any law that prohibits me from rendering it down to a usable Pistol.? It would involve of course cutting the barrel down.

It's your gun, I guess you can do as you wish with it.
Seems like a lot of work. I'd just sell it and use the money to buy a pistol.

I don't know the law in your location but most places it is OK. Cutting it down to a pistol will make a clunky pistol that will have little value, sell it and buy a flint pistol kit or finished one.

I've thought of doing something similar. I don't know how well the slow rifle twist would work in a short pistol.

A ‘blanket’ gun is known from Pontiac’s rebellion. In the west ‘buffalo runners’ were made, although only a few examples are known.
By the 1970s we had invented the canoe gun, or pack gun. A short gun with stock and barrel cut off
In function there is no reason you can cut off oat the comb and just infront of the barrel key

I have a chance to do just that. A friend gave me an old .54 TC Hawken with an extra Green Mtn. 66 twist barrel with the instructions to do what ever I want with it. All it's missing is the lock and L&R makes one to fit for $160.

It would be illegal in any state that considers reproduction or modern muzzleloaders a firearm. An easy way to know where it would be a potential legal issue would be to check where Cabela's or similar retailer won't ship a similar item.

I'm going to take a wild guess that you live in Sussex County, NJ. When you purchased that rifle it was purchased as a rifle and was noted as such from the dealer if indeed you purchased it from a dealer. If you convert it into a pistol then you will have to register it as a pistol with the police department. You could also do nothing and hope that you don't draw attention to yourself by doing something stupid that will cause the police to come knocking on your door. If that happens then I would make friends with your cell mate very quickly
