I am trying to bring the point of impact up on my TVM gun. Its .50 cal pennsylvania long rifle 42in barrel. I am shooting 70 grains of 3f'3 and it is about an inch low at 50 yards. This is a flint gun and I am trying to figure out if it's error on my part but I load the same way rest the same way and pull the trigger the same way and it consistently shoot low. Thanks in advance for your input.

I don't think it's you, most flinching that I noticed is a left to right motion, not up and down movements, so if you flinched, it should effect windage not elevation...

are you shooting from a bench? if so that would eliminate a common problem of dropping the muzzle after the trigger pull that I have seen (and done) by folks used to cartridge and percussion guns. 70 grs fffg is what I use in my .50 44" barreled rifle. I filed down the front sight to raise impact into the bullseye. do this a little at a time--you can't put it back on! do this only if you are happy with the groups using 70 gr fffg. You can increase the load, instead, but that is dependant on your accuracy results. OR you can raise your point of aim.

Have you put a File to the Front, or Rear Sight? If not you should start at a Target out a Maximum of 10 YARDS. Any Further than that would only MAGNIFY YOUR FLINCH, or Movement.

SHOOT off a Bench and See if you can Repeat your HIT on Target in an AREA the Size of a QUARTER.

Than if you are not DEAD CENTER to POINT of Aim Report Results, and I will advise what I know.

P.S. ARE YOU Left or right Handed. Are you Shooting Left or Right Handed.... :hatsoff:

3-Dogs Your front sight is too high, take off a little at time,if you get it too low, cut notch on rear lowder,I use a thin knife blade, they are not that hard as the rule. Usally 10 grs will raise the impact. I always use sand bags to sight in. Another thing I learned is measure the bottom of V of back sight from top barrel flat. Measure front to top of sight, then I mark it .Usually you will have to take down the front sight to the mark. I sight mine so top off front is in bottom of V. If want to take long shot yust see more of front sight. Bobs Black Powder Notebook is good site for sighting in your gun Dilly

okay i gotta ask, i was always taught to shoot abot 200 rounds thru a gun to season/settle a barrel before you start filing..fact or fiction?? thanks !RC

I'd say fiction.

I filed my sites on my GPR the first day I had it on the range and I haven't had to adjust elevation since.

If you go after that front sight with a file, go very slooooowly. Remember, it is a lot easier to remove metal, than it is to put it back on.

200 rds before you start filing? fiction. Many folks will wait until they are sure of a tight grouping load--or have worked up a good hunting load. When you are only 1 inch low filing might not be the first thing I'd do. When I shoot a new rifle and it is 6" or more low, THEN I'll file right away--no mere 'break-in' or reasonable charge increase is going to correct that. My latest rifle (and I was criticised here for it)I filed on the front sight after my first shot and again after my second shot. 1st was a foot low and second was 6" low and 3rd shot was a bullseye. I was using a guessed at charge based on experience and load charts. I haven't fine tuned it yet, but the rifle will now put three shots into the center of the bull at 50 yds. Hey, that is what I want! I quit filing!

This is a farley new gun. I have about 75 balls threw it. I am shooting from a bench but I also use a walking stick as well a sitting with elbows resting on the insides of my knees and off hand. The off hand opens up some and I get fliers that I can call due the the flinch Musket man mentioned.

To raise the point of impact 1 inch at 50 yards, remove .017 from the top of the front sight.

This is based on the distance from the rear sight to the front sight being 30 inches.
