I know this is a little too modern for some but I am going to ask anyway.

I was in my local gun shop today and they had for sale a Davide Pedersoli 1861 Springfield Civil War rifle.

The price was $580 regular $899. It said it had damage and was sold as is.

I could not get the ram rod to come out of the holder and it had one slight flaw on the wood.

The ram rod is supose to come out right?

Yes, the ramrod has to come out to be used. Early original 1861s had a swelled ramrod. Later ones had straight ramrods that relied on a spring built into the stock to retain the ramrod. No telling what reproductions used.

You can access the ramrod channel by removing the barrel/stock clamps and then removing the barrel. Tell the guy to take off another $150, and settle for $125. He needs to cut the price some more because there is no warranty, the wood damage, and the jammed ramrod. Make sure the lock works OK. Take the gun home, remove the barrel, and see what gives.

It is possible, but not likely , that the ramrod is screwed into an internal keeper. However go ahead with your haggleing or check without the owner watching......................watch yer top knot........................

Its at a retail store and their price is set. Its store damaged new not used. On other sites this excact rifle is $1200. I am trying to scrape together the cash but it may take a couple of days.

I am more than willing to take it apart at this price.

It doesn't hurt to politely negotiate retail store or anyplace, talk to the manager, obviously new or not the item has flaws and the store has not moved it you may be surprised at what a cash in hand offer will do.

Nope, no such thing, at least for a less-than-new gun. Of course, they will want you to believe the price is fixed, probably by some manager who is out of the store. If so, then, just walk away.

That sounds like a pretty fair deal to me. I looked around and many have this musket at near a grand. If you see no cracks , dents or rust and you want one of these I would go for this deal. Geo. T.

show up with 5 hundred dollar ills and talk to the STORE MANAGER not the department. cash talks everything else walks

I aksed the girl behind the counter if I could pay for it with my good looks, she told me to go to the bank and get some money because I did not have enough. It hurt my feelings.

I agree. I have looked at others and talked to Civil War Reenactors and they say if they knew where it was they would go get it right now. That is why I want it is to re-sale. Its a steal, I just need to gather up some cash. I just got my son a Beretta M9 and a new set of tires for my Jeep and I am short on funds, thats why I aske if my good looks could by it. I may have to break into my piggy bank.
