I have a fiberglass range rod and was informed by another member of this forum , that it would be a good idea to use a ramrod guide with it , to avoid damage to the muzzle . I was going to make one from wood , but instead I went to the plumbing dept. of a large home improvement store and I got a nylon fitting called a " 1/2" x 3/8" nylon barb to MIP adapter" . It took some filing and sanding to get it to fit my .54 barrel and 3/8" ramrod but it works . The cost ? Less than $2.00 :). Although it's not PC , niether is my fiberglass range rod or my TC Renegade . Soooo  . Has anyone else here tried this ?

When shooting and/or cleaning very much, anything one can do to protect the muzzle is well worth the effort.

I am getting ready to counter bore the muzzle of my M1 Garand, due to several past decades of cleaning by untrained/uncaring GI's with steel cleaning rods. The bore is beautiful, but the muzzle is a bit of a mess.

Ever notice how those cheap and butt ugly Chinese SKS's come with a muzzle protector for cleaning, even the old PRC military got it.

Remember, the barrel's crown rifling is the last thing the projectile touches as it leaves the bore, if it's rough and snags the patch, this will throw accuracy out the window...

So anything you can do to protect the crown is a good thing...

I do the same thing. The barb I get has a threaded end, and I buy a 75 cent cap to screw on the end. Then I drill through the center with a 5/16" drill and slip it over my cleaning rod. I file down the end of the barb until it just starts in the bore. For .40 caliber, I use a brass centerfire cartridge case, such as a .308. Drill the primer pocket out to 5/16 and open up the case mouth from .308 to .315. The cartridge neck centers in the bore.

A brass flare nut from the plumbing dept works pretty good also. (for soft copper tubing connections) If you look you can find them that are long & flared & those are the best, but not being a plumber I don't know if they have a special have for this type.

FWIW, Builder's Supply carries excellent plastic muzzle guides (in fact I think BirdDog6 put me on them a few years ago).

My rods are brass and I have one on every cleaning jag in each different caliber shooting pouch...they're light and dead quiet which is good for hunting...seems like they were a buck apiece I think
