The book great guns, cant recall the writer shows guns with this back to the 17th cent. Italy an switzerland was what I remember at this time.
It would be hard to tell if it was used in 18th cent america, I doubt many rr survive from those times.
Like some of the otherequipment used today you may not find a written source for it, so you cant prove it. Some would not use it for that reason. Others would say you would have to show me why people with wood,stain,candles could not do this.
I like it,myself... but it is a matter of taste, and no one can gainsay you and say it is not correct, because we just don't know.
