I'm hoping I can get some good recommendations for a tackle box or something that will hold everything (except the rifle and range rod, obviously). Something to hold a can of powder and all the trappings of range shooting. Not too big, but organized and big enough to "grab-n-go."

Like everything in this game, range boxes can be very individual to suit ones needs. Just go to Wal-Mart, Bass Pro Shops, etc. and look over the selection and decide for yourself. In fact, I think there are couple plastic :barf: boxes designed just for ml'ers. Looking shooting department also. Keep in mind, regardless of size, you will fill it up with 'stuff'. My old box must have weighed 50 pounds before I retired it.

I pared my list of things to put into my range box from everythign I could think of that I might use to just those things that I know I will need. I put them into a military surplus ammo can. Those things that I could possibly need, I keep in a range box that I built. I leave that range box in the trunk of my car. The one that I carry to the bench contains only powder, balls, patches, caps, a powder measure, a short starter, a small bottle of some diluted Ballistol for wiping between shots, a spout for my powder can and a Multi tool. If I am shooting one of my flint guns, I will add a flint tool and some flints as well as my pan charger. It's about what I might carry in my possibles bag if I was shooting from a bag. Everything else, tools, spare parts, etc. stay in my big range box in the trunk of my car.

I found an old pistol shooters competition box. I reinforced it and gutted the inside. I filed it with plastic fishing type boxes, on the upper half , and on the lower part, I store my powder cans, mallet, rags, and etc. The small clear boxes, with dividers are great for jags, flints, caps and etc. Old wooden boxes, or ones made to look old, look good at the range. I use old prescription bottles for wads, nipples and other small parts, and they will fit in the clear boxes. I put labels on them, to make identifying the contents easier.

I have 3 .30 cal surplus ammo dry boxes. One is for long rifles, one is for c&b pistols, and the third is at home empty but filed on the shoot morning with specifics such as lubes, powder, flask measure spout, etc from the big tackle box on the workbench.

Are you certain you need all that extra stuff? Your rifle bag & horn should suffice.

Tried switching bags back and forth to fit the gun, always had smothing I didnt need and missed somthing I did. Get multi boxs one per gun or per caliber.

I've turned two commercial, wood boxes into my blackpowder accoutrement boxes.
One was a sewing box from Johanna's Sewing shop. It was unfinished, with a very thin and weak bottom. I added some 1 x 2 pieces on the bottom, reinforced corners and added latches.
Original with 1 x 2 pieces added:

The other was a wooden box in the gun section of Walmart. I sanded off the hokey wildlife scene, added some partitions and just have started refinishing it. The original:

When we have match shooting at my gun club there may be 2o to 30 shooters on the line. There will also be 20 to 30 different range boxes on the line as well.

Choosing a range box.
1. Set out what you would need for a session at the range.
2. Sort the items by size.
3. Go to a hardware store that sells inexpensive tool boxes and get one that will allow you to hold all that gear, close securely, and is sturdy enough to not fall apart in use. I prefer removable trays to hold the small items.

My friend Mike is right....

It's like asking about a shooting pouch or shooting bag....

They are all different, as each shooter thinks he/she needs different tools and such. I placed all the stuff that I needed in an "organized" pile, and then designed my shooting bag to hold it all.

When I go to simply shoot, I only take my bag and horn. When I go to work on sights, or to diagnose a problem, I take a small, plastic tool box with the additional stuff I may need.

So laying out what you want to carry for your "box", and then making a choice, is a very good idea.

Also, my cats must lay in absolutely everything resembling any sort of box as well... Nice models two, love those P-47 you have there!

I started with a small canvas military tool bag. I eventually out grew it when I kept adding calibers. Then I switcher to two bags. One for large and one for small calibers. Like someone else posted though, seemed like something was always missing or too much I didn't need so I now use a small/medium size tackle box. It works for the most part but I have to check it before I leave according to what I intend to shoot to make sure I have enough or what I need. Minies and maxis are heavy si I quit carrying them unless I intend to shoot them which I don't much anymore.

Your right, that's fer sure. Hunting, or a day trip, or even some woods walks it's best to go simple.
But at rendezvous shooting range it's nice to have a few extra gadgets to play with and kinda fun, it's part of the vacation/play time we have at vous`.

This is quite true. I can't tell you how many times my shooting session was cut short because something happened or I forgot something and couldn't continue. It pays to have extra things just in case.
