Thankyou mtmanjim, They have alot of all kinds of them wooden sewing box's on Ebay. Alot of them are very reasonable in price. Alot of them have the BUY NOW option. This one was an auction and I placed the one and only bid on it and won it. I think all the compartments in it caught my eye. Like to be as organized as possible. Saves time and helps keeping me from making mistakes if that is possible :rotf: Respectfully, cowboys1062.

I think that box is ideal.
Like you, I bring what I think I might need when at the range. That includes many extras that I wouldn't carry if I was being HC/PC.

It's just a matter of convenience - and the fact that I am more than an hour drive away from home if there is something I need that I don't have.

Like you, I often bring multiple guns, sometimes a flint lock and a cap lock; sometimes a rifle and a pistol.
Also, like you, I turned an unfinished sewing box into a range box with some reinforcement.

It's good to be prepared. You never know what you might need at the range:

Thankyou for your reply Ron. I definitely like your box too. Its always nice to have what you might need on hand. There is nothing that could keep me from shooting if I run into a basic problem. Everything that I can think of to keep me going is on hand should the need arise. I love your second picture! :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: Respectfully, cowboys1062.

Hey, thanks a million for sharing the idea, very interesting. I'll most definitely check them out.

What I use is a Plano rolling tool box. It has several drawers and a tip out box on the bottom. It also has wheels and a 2 wheeler type handle. so when I fill it up with all that I need for the day I just tip it back and roll on. It also has a long steel bar that drops in front of all the drawers and tipout and locks in place. I bought it at Menards for about 50 buck. Yae the boxes on ebay may be cheaper but I don't have to buy wood, and take the time to modify it for use.

 That sounds like a good setup. But I think the interest in converting the old sewing boxes is to make it all look a little more "old timey" though.

For many years I used a large box made by a friend. And, I filled it with more 'stuff' than needed for a days shooting at the range. For a long time I was the 'go to' guy to help when someone had a problem with their rifle. I even carried a vise :shocked2: in the box plus tools. It got to the point I was needing to add wheels and a V-8 to move it around. My old shoulders dictated a smaller box so I got a used large tackle box that I could carry. But, I have found a way to make that heavy also. (some folks never learn  ). There are tools in there and about five sizes round balls I no longer use just in case someone at the range needs them. Yes, the shoulders are still getting older and I am about to cut down on that extra weight again.
Just select what you need and find a box that works for you. This game should be fun not work.

No matter how big my shooting box, I use two machinist tool cases, one for my muzzle loaders and one for my single shot rifles. All the "stuff" I need will never fit in either of them. I guess you know what I mean. The last few years we've not spent a whole day at the range. Time seems to catch up with you. The "boxes" are still there waiting, they seem to have more time than I do. I still think about it. Maybe once or twice again down the road, or more, hopefully. I enjoy this "muzzleloading site" Thanks.

I have range bags and boxes for all occasions: 1 each for cap & flint rifles, another for smoothbore flint and fowler, and another for cap & ball revolver.

When you put too much stuff into a single box, it not only becomes heavy, but it's like a woman's purse, you either have to paw thru it, digging to find what you need, or dump it out ...

I also have small flip cap centrifuge tubes I've been using lately for premeasured powder & shot. They're great for weight reduction in a day bag, too.

Have everything I need to shoot for the day at the range and is well organized as well!

It is setup for .45 and .50 muzzleloaders.

The weight isn't that heavy. Don't have to carry it very far from the car to the shooting benches anyway.

I always setup for multiple muzzleloader's. I usually bring 2 or 3 at a time when I shoot for the day.

Careful what ya put in there. A box that size can easily end up weighing 35-40# (or more)

I'll say a big AMEN! to that. I built a nice big range box to carry all of the things that one could ever possibly need when shooting a muzzleloader. It's all in there and I am completely ready to handle all possibilities. But, that darned thing has gotten so heavy that I almost get a hernia when I load it into the trunk of my car when going to the range. My solution was to make another small box to carry only the basic needs and leave the big heavy box in my car. It is there if I ever need anything from it but I sure don't carry it to the bench any more. It sure seemed like a good idea at the time. :haha: I might add that aesthetically, it is a real beauty, though.

RIGHT ON Bill! My big box has extra FFg and FFFFg, flints, .395, .495 and .535 balls, nipples, patch material, various tools like files, punches. Also spare sights and several tins with parts for different locks. The main spring on my Cochran lock broke after 30 years and less than 15 minutes later was shooting again.

All that and it seldom is opened at the range.

I did find one solution for those times when you have a bunch of stuff that you need to move around such as when I am developing a load at the range and need a spotting scope, bench rest, sand bags, etc. This is it. It is well made. http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/ac...rt-wagon--removable-bed?repChildCatid=3123583

I also use it to carry in the groceries from the car. It's also handy when traveling or returning from a trip to bring in all of the luggage in one trip rather than making several trips back and forth to the car. Everything in one trip and then the cart folds away and can be stored in a very small space. For only $50, you can't go wrong.

I decided on K.I.S.S. - and use several (free) milsurp USGI steel OD green .50cal ammo cans, labeling one can each for the calibers (.36, .45, .50, .54), I have - plus another ammo can for my cleaning supplies.

This is what I use but I don't have enough boxes to have one for each rifle. I just inventory what is in the box and change what's in it depending on which rifle I am carrying. If I carry more than one rifle, I do have a second spare ammo can that I put the necessary things for the extra rifle. It's a good system and I wish I had enough duplicate supplies and boxes so I could have a separate box for each rifle. You are a lucky duck to be able to do that.

Easy fix Bill. When yer done shooting leave yer supplies laying around, like on the dining room table, or better yet on the kitchen counter. Patti will then "put them away" and when your ready to go out again you, of course wont be bale to find em. Thus you make a quick stop at yer local supply vendor to pick up the missing short starter, capper, jag, or whatever is "missing". You enjoy your day. Repeat when you get back home.

Soon, as have I, you will have duplicate measure, starters, cappers, EVERYTHING. This works because in the time between range appointments while yer least expecting it a few of the items will magically "pop up" where they were "put away".

Using this very system I have boxes for 32-36, .45, .50 .54, .58. shot gun, revolver and a separate cleaning box. Get the same size for each caliber, they stack sooo nicely.

And once your inventory is complete simply put yer own stuff away and yer done! Easy Pezzie....you'll see

My box is set up to shoot with 2-3 rifles at a time. All I have to do is just change out the balls for the given rifle's I plan on taken.

Everything else is ready and available in the box. It is set up for a long day at the range.

It is intended to be a range only aid. I do not hunt anymore and the only shooting I do is at the range.

Have used this box since and it is not a choir to carry to my firing position. I open it up and work out of it and shoot all day! Never have a problem going to whatever I need or want.

Very handy to have with you if you do the kind of shooting that I do.

When I get home, I replace what I have used out of the box and I'm ready for my next outing.

Just one way that one shooter does things!

Respectfully, Cowboy :hatsoff:

Thats nice Mr. Cowboy and a great idea, easy access and like you stated just swap out the balls for different caliber
