Sounds like you got a real shooter there roundball. I'm glad to hear everything worked out so well for you. Enjoy!
Yes, it sure zeroed right in when I stepped up to 100grns 2F...the barrel rifling project was a good learning experience too.

Now if I can just win one of those all expense paid hunting trips somewhere that has big game requiring a 325grn lead ball, I'll be all set!!

Ive got to get to see the Dr or Id tell you about them, But Long Hammock at 352 748 7373 has rifled 62's I belive they are 32-33"X 1" may take the hassel out of haveing one rifled. Fred :hatsoff:

Are you saying that Longhammock makes finished, blued barrels with sights, tenons, underrib all designed as drop-in barrels for a TC Hawken like GM does?

My new underhammer is almost ready to shoot. The barrel I ordered from Ed Rayl is:

1” Straight Octagon .62 caliber 32” length

Forsyth Rifling: 1:104 inches, right hand, 8 wide shallow grooves, narrow lands to duplicate at closely as possible the Pacific Rifle Company Zephyr Underhammer.

I'm thinking that my grooves are shallower. That, plus the slower twist leads me to believe that I should start at 100 gr 2F. I'm going to mike the barrel. If it is .62, I'll order .610 balls, wonderwads, and .015/.018 patches. I'm not too worried about the recoil because we put a Pachmayr Decelerator pad on it.

Any Thoughts?

last year i keelhauled a 2x3 buck with my .62and 115 gr 2f goex.. it was hit thru one lung, then out the other lung, nicked the spine on the way and out the far shoulder might have gone over one lung not sure... .. it flopped a couple times and was dead.. damage to the meat was almost nill.. kind of like someone poked a 5/8 inch steel rod thru it.. maybe if i hit the shoulder on the way in it would be different, but the "why the heck do you need all that power to kill a deer" idea wont make alot of sence when you see how well it works on a couple deer.. remember to drop your charge when it gets warm out.. when you see it start ot shoot high from recoil, drop about 10-15 grains from winter loads.. and accuracy will come back and the point of impact will resemble the winter load. recoil is part of the impact point on such a gun and i keep it in check by changing loads from winter to summer.. youll also notice shooting form is important with a lightweight big bore with that much power to keep accuracy and point of impact in check.. good luck and have fun!! dave..

A .62 cal barrel is normally .615 in diameter. You should be using .600 " diameter balls, or possibly even .595 " balls in that gun. Do measure the bore, and groove diameter. Or, Give Ed a phone call. He can tell you the dimensions, and you can order your balls now, while waiting to receive the gunbarrel. He can also make a suggestion on the correct thickness of patching to be using with the barrel.

No , didnt mean that at all. does GM make them now? (drop in 62s rifled?) just seen so many post about not finding a rifleds 62 barrel lately when I ordered my 2 yesterday I taged it to your thread, one of mine was for a T/C with sight, ect cuts made and threaded for T/Cs flint breech- that may be a one of thing since Ive got so many uh barrels from them over the years, Ed is still the best way to go if you have the barrel. Fred :hatsoff:

Right...these are complete, blued, GM .62cal drop-in smoothies for TC Hawkens/Renegade stocks...had Ed Rayle rifle one for $65

Sooo no one is makeing a rifled drop in for T/C in 62, GM is a smooth and Long Hammock doesnt have the breech plug. :rotf: Get it together guys!Fred :hatsoff:

GM says there isn't enough market demand for a .62cal Hawken drop-in rifled barrel to invest in tooling up.
Ed said he could make a complete one but:
1) I'd already have to own a GM 1" drop in for him to borrow as a pattern. ($225)
2) His new barrel complete rifled barrel would be another pile of money; ($275)
3) And, it would all still be in the white so another $75 bucks would have to be shelled out to have it blued somewhere.

$575 for a barrel plus all the shipping and a year to get it.

This way it was a GM barrel, plus $65, and done in a month.

Interestingly, about 5 other people have contacted me for details, then buying a GM smoothbore from Cains Outdoors, and then sending them to Ed Rayl to have them rifled the same way.
May have a little "fad" starting here...

Can see GM's point on that. Ive just seen a lot of "where do I get a rifled 62" lately on here (all locations together) Mine ran 120 plus I pay for sights, breech plug, ect. These have run up and down the last 3 yrs here of everyone wants one (62 or bigger cal)then no one does kind of like the underhammers. :hmm: Fred :hatsoff: (my time to get one is about 2 weeks, but its made that way not rifled from a smooth bore - more work Id think to do that way and Ed stays busy for good reason.

Don't have a picture on hand...guess I could take one this weekend...but essentially it's just a TC Hawken Flintlock with a GM barrel that looks like a TC barrel...the bore just happens to be .62cal instead of TC's largest which is .58cal.

I've heard of deer being "broadsided" and "pole-axled", but that's the first "keelhauling" I can remember.

Sounds like a fun piece, Roundball. You're in Jäger territory with that tube.
