I was able to get out again with my GPR .54. I forgot the whiteout someone suggested but I seemed to be able to see the front sight a little better anyway today. I also wanted to be a little more organized than I was last time out, but still have fun. Weather 54F, wind 10mph at my back mostly so likely didn’t affect much.

I started out just shooting a water filled liter bottle off hand to “season” the barrel, , and got it in 2 shots at 50yds.

Then I started at 70 gr 2F Goex, a .530 ball, and .018 pre lubed pillow tick. #2 was a flyer. In looking at this, I wonder if I change something from 1 way to another between shots but consistent in every other way, and end up with two distinct groups. ????

I changed to 80 gr of the Goex, all rest the same. I am pretty happy with this group at this point. I lost 3 of them, but the rest came in at around 2”.

I finished up with another couple liter bottles and 2 clay pigeons for the extra fun part. In the offhand position at 50yds, 3 shots took care of the 2 bottles. At that point I must have gotten a little cocky and needed some humbling, because it took me 3 shots to finish the last clay pigeon.

I ran out of time. I'm a little busy these days, but cannot wait to get out and punch it up to 90gr 2F, check with 3Fand see what happens.

All in all a good day.

Well done,
Changing from off hand to a bench with a different hold will certainly change the point of impact.
It's a good idea to go in 5grn increments instead of 10grns.
You might miss the sweet load at 75 or 85.

When I bench, I hold the rifle the same and rest my hand on the pads/bags not the rifle.
It's a little different technique than the CF rifles.

I'd say you are on the right track so far. Good job, keeping a notebook too. Advice you may have already heard before, but new Lyman barrels usually need to be shot a few dozen times and/or have the bore polished to bring out the best accuracy, so keep at it.

This rifle isn't new. I think the barrel markings point to a 1979 manufacture and it shows some usage, which I like. I imagine that someone else has enjoyed this gun for a while. I'm just continuing the tradition.

Getting a good group is a bit of a challenge as I have eyesight issues, I'm not completely used to open sights(use peeps on my GPH .50), along with working up the load on a new to me gun.

But this rifle seems to shoot very well and I enjoy it. I can't wait to get out with it again.

All in all a good day.

brother,
with some more practice and good eyes, you'll be able to get that grouping at 100 yards, as i do. 90 grains ffg or rs pyrodex, .53" ball and .018" patch olive oiled, works like a charm, every time.

I also have a gpr in .54 and I use a .530 rb with a .020 patch. You might try that to tighten up the group a little. I like a tight patch combo.

jmho.

Here it today's result with 90 gr 2f Goex. I knew #1 would be off. This is a 3"circle.

I'm pretty happy with this (ecstatic might be the word). I also wonder if red is just my color. :hmm:. I think I'm done testing which load works best. This load shoots better than I do.

This is 10 shots. I assume 7 of them went into that square hole, because I could not find anywhere else they went.

The next range session I will be concerned with the first shot, simulating hunting conditions.

I went through all the posts and didn't find a target distance. Is this a 50 yard target? If so, pretty darned good. If the range is 25 yards, still pretty darned good. Bill
