I saw this rare flintlock rifle at a local Civil War Show this past weekend. The gun is going up for auction soon. The auction housemaid only a few of these are known to exist. They believe it was either a Colonial Soldier battlefield pick up or a British soldier deserter as the crown markings are scrapped off.

I have built a handful of those over the years. The pictures don't show the ram rod swivel at the muzzle. I wish I would have kept one of those to play with now.

HI,
It looks like the real thing to me. Mike, I bet the swivel is gone. I don't think they lasted very long in service. It has the big ramrod retaining spring between the first 2 pipes.

This is for Dave, I saw this on the Cowan auction sight where there are better photos. The lock does not fit the inlet, the top jaw and screw are from a different lock, on the inside of the lock the sear spring and main spring are not ordnance parts. The barrel proof marks and stampings do not have any pitting in them as the rest of the surronding barrel does. The story about the markings filed off is just that a story. Always buy the rifle not the story. Dave give us your thoughts.
