Hello all. I'm looking for a small portion of treated rattlesnake skin to use for accenting a project of mine I'm cooking up in my head. It would need to be at least 4" long, but only about 3" wide. Diamondback would be really nice for the pattern.

Also, anyone know where I can purchase a rattler. Doesn't need to be very big (about 1.5" or so), just intact and with enough rattles inside to hear when shook.

Suggestions on where I can find these parts?

Are we men or are we a bunch of ninnies sitting around on our butts?!
Go out and find yerself a rattler and kill it with your hawk.
Geez! Some folks get lazy when they have all these modern conveniences.
:bull: :blah:  :peace:

Last time I was in Arizona, hiking along the salt river, I came accross a 4' rattler. Wanting to apease the "rattler gods" I just chucked a rock and moved out fast! Thinking back, he would have made a dandy hatband..
yea, look on ebay, lots of rattler stuff

"...enough rattles inside to hear when shook..."

Whan ye gets it, dont look inside ta see em rattles. Thay ain't in thar.

It isn't somethin inside that makes them rattle. It's just the hard hollow shells shaking aginst one another.

Damdest thing about 'em critters. Even folks who never heard one in thier life, levitate about 2 feet when one under a bush about 2 feet away starts a buzzin!! Then while still up thar, their feet start going, turnin into a blurred image.
By the time their feet return to earth, they've got thar feet up to about 30 miles an hour, so the rocks, bush an sometimes the snake go flyin off in the other direction!

Me??? Why no!! Ma feet war only goin 'bout 27 miles an hour whan Ah hit the ground. :: :: ::

Snakes are just coming out here in Phoenix. The one they had on TV last night was only 6 ft long and about 4 inches in diameter. He was on someone's back porch! The part of the valley I live in has plenty of snakes. I just don't go looking. Last time I had one crawl between my feet I jumped 6 feet straight up and hit the ground doing 32MPH! Took a while to find the brake!

Try searching Google under Taxidermy supplies, or Ebay under sporting goods taxidermy Bill

We have a store , a few miles west of here, that sells tanned rattlesnake skins . They have bobcat head skins , fox, pheasant, etc.
It's in St. Elmo, IL, right next to I-70 called Driftstone Pueblo. They have all sorts of primitive (and modern) craft supplies. I don't think they have a web site. I can check.

I have some skin here that I would love to send you for free, but it has some problems.
#1 it it from a great basin rattler, which does not have a distinct diamond pattern.
#2 it is too narrow for your project. (it is only about 2")
If you want to try it anyway, let me know.

Last time I looked, there were a bunch (I mean a whole lot of bunches)of snakes in Washington. I bet they even rattle some.

I wouldn't want to do anything with their skin though, I'd just like em' out of my hair. Have you seen my hair lately? There's not a whole lot left!

It's best to leave them sorta snakes alone.

:youcrazy: :youcrazy: :youcrazy: I agree, the only good snake is a dead one. I'm building a road on my property and right now it is on hold because they are researching a nonexisting rattlesnake den that is on my ground. They are saying that it was "documented" and I may have to move the road to another location so we don't disturb the slimey things. Wish I could find that den and build the road right on top of it.  What's wrong with this goofy world.

Snakes are very useful members of the animal community. Granted, you don't want to make a venomous one angry, but they do serve a good purpose, and they're not slimy.

That doesn't mean I don't think the local government is goofy for possibly messing with your road plans... but I do disagree with "the only good snake is a dead one". If you ever have a rodent problem, turn a couple of non-venomous black snakes loose... they'll have it under control in no time! 'Course rattlers will too... but yeah, I wouldn't want my yard full of rattlers either.

Griz,
us snakes don't think to highly of bears either         :peace: :)
snake-eyes :blah: :hmm: :blah: :hmm: :blah:

I recon they have a purpose, But after workin most of my life as a logger, I don't have much sympathy towards them. the only one I have anything thing for is that one that lives in Ohio....I think he's OK :haha:
I figured someone wouldn't like my comments on snakes, but I sure don't want to tick anyone off either, no matter how you slice it I just cants stands em', unless I see them first.

Massasauga rattlers (the only kind we have in Michigan) are protected. Supposedly they are endangered, even before I get one in my sights. However, having lived and hunted and fished in Florida and Texas, our snakes are mild and rare. Still, I feel a rattler is a lot better neighbor after his head has been blown off. graybeard :imo:

I've had a few run-ins with rattlers in Texas.
They do their best to get away from you before you get too close.
We ran one over one night with the truck and had to catch it and finish it off. They are some pretty mean buggers when an eight inch section of their body is crushed.
The ones I worry about most are the babies that are small and hard to see. Their venom is more potent than an adults.

When we moved to OK in the early 80's we built a house. Moved in before Christmas when it was getting cold. Dogs raised cain one evening while my wife was gone. Noise in the furnace room that I KNEW what it was. Boxes still packed so I found a golf club (before I messed my back up). Opened the door in time to see a couple of inches of tail and 4-5 rattles disappear into the hole in the floor that the air conditioning drain tubes went into. Stuffed that sucker full of insulation, steel wool and the next day a pound of plaster. Next spring killed a dozen or more small ones and one 3 footer with the lawnmower. Gooey. Had an earlier experience at Scout Camp I'll write about some time. :peace: Tinderbox

Bah, you didn't tick me off... I just wanted to point out they do serve a purpose. I realize they're not for everybody... but next time you see one (if it ain't in yer house or yer bedroll) try to just leave it alone instead of goin' outta yer way to kill it. Believe me, it's more scared of you than you are of it. :redthumb:
