After soaking mine (8 oz) for four hours, I finally resorted to standing a piece of old shovel handle upright in my vise, then pulling and cussing the bag down over that. Seemed a bunch easier just because it freed up my hands for grabbing and tugging, plus I could use my weight to help pull down on the bag.

But I still won't use such heavy leather again!!!!!

I've had a couple of stubborn 5-6oz bags that were hard to turn. Never tried an 8oz'er. :shocked2:

I used a sledge hammer.

Not what yer thinkin'. Stood the sledge on the ground, handle up, and pulled the bag down over the end of the handle using both hands and my weight.

:haha: I did think about soaking it but being lined I figured the dyes would leach into the cloth and ruin the look so I decided that wasn't an option.

Probably reflecting my southwestern heritage with leather, I never considered NOT soaking the leather for turning, and therefor have never given linings much of a look for the reasons you state. Sounds like we're looking at the same issues from different sides, doesn't it?

I'll have to try turning without soaking, rather than just going ahead and soaking without thinking about it. I've always liked the looks of liners, but shied away from them. Sounds like a good next build.......... After I get some lighter leather! :surrender:

this method has served me well for turning stubborn pouches. i soak mine in about a gallon of luke warm water with some downy brand fabric softener, maybe a cup full. works good and stays a bit more supple later. youre right with the liner, anything other than oil or veg tan will seep dye into the fabric.

I guess I need to address some complaints. Any "project" that I post here in this forum, I do so in hopes that it may give someone an idea to do it themselves. If I can turn one person on making their own bag then it makes my day. No moneys have been or will be given for this project.

Sorry to hear that you've been getting complaints.

Refer the whiners to the complaint department. It's behind the door marked Men. Stand there with both feet in that white contraption, and don't mind the water. Now hold your nose and push down on that little silver lever. Your complaint is now filed where it belongs.
