Do you know what the groove diameter is? From what I understand it's best to be slightly over that for a good bore seal.
 
I've found it easier to get the 250gr .50 REAL to shoot accurately in a variety of barrels than its heavier 320gr sibling. Part of what is in play is that the bottom band of the 250gr is firmly in contact with the rifling (in my barrels) vs the bottom band of the 320gr that falls in. My "quick twist" seems to be 1-17"(checked multiple times) and the slower barrels are 1-48". One of those 1-48" doesn't want to shoot a PRB worth a hoot, but it does fine with a 250gr REAL.
 
Have you tried a .50 MINIE (they DO cast them.) in your barrels?

It's NO secret on this forum that I'm a FAN of 2 different calibers:
1. .36 cal., so that I can use PRB (000 Buck) for small (tree rats, bunnies, etc.) and "medium small" (foxes, coons, possums, etc.) game AND for targets, all year
AND
2. .58 PRB for WT and HEAVY (over 500 grains) Minies for TOUGHER to STOP game.
(Like BIG hogs & TX Exotics, which grow faster/bigger/tougher here than they do on their "home range".= "Blue Bulls" really do grow >100 POUNDS bigger here than in India!).

You don't say what kind of rifle that you shoot but because you consistently hit the black at 100 yards with a patched round ball, you most likely have a slow twist barrel. My theory is supported by the fact that you are not getting any real accuracy with the R.E.A.L. bullets. An easy way to measure your rate of twist is to start a lightly oiled patch in the bore. Tape a business cart to the upper part of the ramrod and slowly push the ramrod down the bore until it has rotated 1/4 turn. Stop and mark the ramrod where it protrudes from the muzzle and mark it there. Withdraw the ramrod and measure the distance where you marked the ramrod and the jag part of the ramrod where you first inserted it into the bore. Multiply that distance X 4 will = rate of twist.
 
Brown Water Navy...I should have known! I thought it was just from wading through too much snow! :thumbsup:
