Realistic Hawkin kit?

Does anyone other than Lyman make a Hawkin/Plains rifle kit that is comparible to the Pedersoli Rocky Mtn. Hawkin?

The link by Goldhunter will take you to what is reputed to be as authentic as you can get. The Track kits are nice but I can't comment on their authenticity.

Whatever time period of a Hawken you would choose from full stock, J&S Hawken or the later S. Hawken, Don Stith offers them all and they're "copied" from originals. Built a Stith S. Hawken kit 2 yrs. ago and the tapered bbl has to be breeched and the hooked breech had to be fitted but the rest is pretty staight foreward. Possibly both the half stock "kits" aren't for the "beginner" but Don is quite willing to answer any questions. If you want the most authentic "Hawken" that's available and have some skill w/ tools,by all means contact Don Stith. Tow's "kits" are of the same complexity and perhaps installing the breech plug would be an appropriate extra cost option. If a tapered bbl is available, the balance would be better seeing some of the larger straight bbls contribute to a fairly heavy rifle.....Fred

The tapered barrel is well worth any extra cost. It is amazing what it does for the balance of the rifle. Oh, and Don Stith is definitely the man to talk to.

Not a kit, but further evidence in favor of the tapered barrels:

I've got a GRRW 58 cal half-stock Hawken with a 36" tapered barrel. I was downright shocked with the difference when I handled a friend's custom built full-stock with a straight 36" barrel.

Get the tapered barrel!

Should probably point out that the parts sets from Track and especially fron Don Stith are much more authentic than the Pedersoli. The Lyman is a good gun but it isn't a Hawken and it sounds like you want an authentic Hawken--always an admirable desire. Quality and authenticity do cost more, but are worth it in the end. I don't know what Don Stith is asking these days, but it's worth every penny whatever it is. The full stock is likely to be a little easier to build--especially if this is your first time.

They are not made anymore. They were available as an in the white kit. That's how I got mine about 20 years ago.

Once in a while you will find one on the auction sites.

A good place to go would be www.thehawkenshop.com this is the web site for the Hawken Shop itself. It may be located in Washington State it is the real deal. Great stuff and they are very helpful.
