I would like to get my smoothbore rebored from 28ga to 20ga, but Bobby Hoyt's wait time is 4mos anybody know of someone else that can get my barrel back to me sooner?

I can't answer your question so I'm no help there. That said, I'm on this forum quite a bit and have read a large number of posts regarding Bobby Hoyt and his work. I don't recall a single comment that indicated the poster was dissatisfied in any way with his workmanship or the wait. In fact many expressed surprise at how fast their finished barrel came back. He hasnt done any work for me but my hunch is that he's backed up for only one reason - he's that good and the wait is worth it...YMMV

They don't all come back perfect but he will do what ever it takes to correct a problem.

I am debating about one now, If I can get it to group I am OK with it because the barrel is on a junker rifle. He is a great guy, hard to say anything bad.

I sent a barrel to him a year ago and it came back in about 6 weeks. Regardless, his work is simply amazing in its quality and precision.

Reboring a smooth bore is not as precise as doing a rifle. Many people could do it. But the question is safety. Shotguns have much thinner barrels than rifles. Would the barrel be safe after boring it out to a large gauge?

yeah I wanted to go with Bobby, because of all the great things I was told,I may have to just bite the bullet and wait.

Ed probably does have a longer backlog than Hoyt for the same reason he does great work at a very fair price! I have one of Ed's barrels in a .45 caliber flintlock rifle of mine - it's a tack driver! I for one have NO problem waiting for the best barrel men in America to do work on my rifles, the darn things cost so much these days! My advice, send it to Bobby and before you know it the barrel will be back and you'll be glad you did!

Both Bobby Hoyt and Ed Rayle are getting pretty long in the tooth so may be slowing down. Plus, EVERYONE working on m/l guns has been swamped during the Covid-19 fiasco and they are still way behind. I have a barrel at the Mold & Gun Shop, just need a stripped clean out screw removed and he can't get to it for a month or more. Pecatonica River is copying a stock for me and gave a tentative time of 8 weeks out.

Parts are hard to get also. Bobby told me that he will build a smooth bore barrel for my T-C if I can get all the other parts (under rib, under lug, RR pipes, breech plug, front sight) as he doesn't have the time to chase down who has them available.

Strange times!
