Question, don't know if this is the right place.
On a shotgun, or rifle. What is the actual function of the wedge besides holding the barrel to stock. Does it absorb some of the recoil energy?

Holds the stock to the barrel.

The recoil energy is transmitted from the barrel to the breech where it is bedded into the stock. The lugs or pins just keep the barrel in the channel.

Ok, really appreciate y'all. So soldering should be sufficient for a shotgun and no need to weld. Correct ?

I also noticed the breech hook? Doesn't actually hook to the receiver on the tang. It acts as an "anvil wedge" when the barrel is installed the system pulls the barrel up tight. Or so that's what it looks like to me.

It holds the barrel to the standing breech which via the tang screw and the wedge holds the assembly to the stock.

I am using two 1/16 inch pins to hold the barrel down in a 4 bore. The recoil is massive and it works just fine.

You ever see a guy try to take the barrel out of the stock at the ram rod still in? LOL

Just make sure you get a good solder joint. I've read that you should never weld on a barrel since it will create a tight spot in the bore. True or not???

Don't know. But the barrels of doubles, drillings, and Cape guns are all soldered. Not welded.

Yes I have, me. But that was due to forgetfulness. I think I'm starting to get old timersness.

If you solder, be sure the fit is good enough so recoil ISN'T riding on the pins.

I read the reviews on that stuff. They are unfounded claims. Just a regular daily vitamin is sufficient.
