id like a pistol to act as a backup to my 50 cal long rifle. id like to be able to use the same ball and powder (if possible). i use 2F Schuetzen which has pretty small granuals so it should work.

can you recomend a pistol? (dont forget to mention where i can get it)

thanks!

There are a lot of good shooters out there. I own several CVA pistols and they are all great shooters. I also own a Pedersoli Kentucky in .50. Its pretty and well built. Lyman pistols I've heard are very accurate. Guess it all depends on how much you're willing to pay. CVAs are inexpensive, Pedersoli's are more and Lyman are in between.

Think more along,"One shot, one kill" If you didnt get the job done with a rifle, what will you have as a back up????Fast feet,,if they catch me I'll be all pooped out, just to tired care.
Unless you just like the looks,I have a 50 cal,,I lug,,, sometimes,,looks good,,ha ha ha never used it,,but it looks good,,heavy to.

please dont misunderstand, im thinking more along the lines of someone else seeing that i just fired my rifle and taking advantage of me not having a loaded gun.

i thought about the howdah hunter, but two things hold me back:

1. its expensive
2. ive heard the barrels arent in sync with each other. (ex: left barrel will shoot high and right while the right barrel will shoot low and left)

i was looking at the Lyman plains pistol, all the reveiws have been decent, but i have some time before i can spend any more $$ so i figured id get more opinions.

Traditions Trapper
Crazy accurate, available in flint or cap.
Inexpensive.
Mid South shooters supply usually has a very good price.

In pa we are liimited to flint for the three weeks after Christmas. There isn't much out there in flinnt from production makers

I have the Traditions Kentucky in .50, also very accurate. But the Trapper model may be more user friendly in a hunting scenario. Lyman plains pistol, likewise. If you are considering any reenacting, a style that would be consistant with your rifle would be nice. There are still quite a few old CVA Mountain pistols or Hawken Pistols out there in the used market. Deer creek may still have some of those models available.

I have a traditions trapper in flint. It is twice as heavy as a TC Patriot and quite front heavy. If hunting with it I would be using a two hand hold for sure. (the TC Scout is probably the only muzzle loading pistol heavier than the trapper.)

If you are using the gun as backup to keep from others trying to claim your kill, an 1858 Remington would be a better choice. It is a lot more intimidating when worn in a holster.

Many Klatch

When out in the boonies doing the p/c thing my backup is the Lyman Plains Pistol. Very accurate as the guys said and dependable, has never failed to fire.

there's a flint traditions trapper in the classifieds right now for a good price. it should use the same ball and powder as your rifle.
