Well, I have a bit of money to spend - I am looking to add a smoothbore flintlock pistol to my arsenal - something in a bigger bore - used for last ditch - boar, bear or man killin.

I've not run any shot through mine yet. What type of shot and charge are you putting in there? Does it throw a pretty good pattern? They sure do have a good kick when you are loading up a hot load. If you are going completely traditional they would sure make a great back up on a boar or bear hunt as the original poster was asking about. Boys and their toys... Heh Heh Heh!

I actually havent shot any shot yet...but I am gonna load it the same as a 20 ga smoothbore.
Wick Ellerby said he is shootin 50 grains powder adn 1 1/8 ounce shot in his with no Ill effects and good patterns out to 20 yds. Nice bunny gun,or perhaps grouse??? and Yep..boys & thier toys ...I just wish I had more TIME !!!

I have several smoothbore pistols. The best one for shot is my Tower .67cal. I shoot 35g of 3F and 1oz of 7 1/2 shot, it patterns well to about 15 yards and has taken several grouse. It also is fun with PRB, no sights on it but its a hoot to shoot. I also use a .54 cal smoothbore, it shoots prb very well and is ok with a 3/4 oz load of shot also with 35g of 3F. Good patern out to 20 feet. The .67 has a 9inch barrel and the .54 has a 11 inch barrel.

KHick---I hear you. There is something about having a back-up flintlock in big bore for last resort defense!

I am making one now: A 50 Cal flintlock "derringer". Barrel will be about 4 inches long. I started with an off-the-shelf half pistol stock and have been filing and filing the wood away. Using a small siler lock and a barrel I made.

I intend to make a double barrel flintlock pistol as well in 58 to 62 caliber. I have been drooling over the double barrel flintlock pistol in The Rifle Shoppe catalog. But I am still waiting on the Twigg Pistol I purchased from them last October so I'm not about to send another order into them.

Something about a hand cannon. And always a hoot to shoot!

As far as a recommendation to you, I suppose knowing if you have a length and weight range that would help. For me a backup pistol is best being small and short so that it is easier to carry than the big dragoons in big bore. I guess that is why I just chose to make my own or modify the ones outs there to get the "SNUB NOSED" flintlock that--in my opinion---is the best backup approach.

Another option I would suggest is the .50cal. Pedersoli "Queen Anne" pistol. A smart looking pistol, estetic to the 18th century. Feedback from those I know have them has been very positive.

The Pedersoli Queen Anne is a nice pistol but if a person wants to shoot it a lot they should modify the vent as described in this link

I built this one from a kit and although the picture doesn't show it properly I polished the barrel and left it in the white.
