I am nearing completion on this years build. Only a bit of wire inlay, stock finishing and final assembly to be done. Now contemplating what to work on over the coming winter. A .58 in Lancaster styling comes to mind as I don't have one in that caliber. I would like to hear your thought regarding where to go for parts. TOW doesn't seem to carry any .58's. I've been very pleased with purchases from Pecatonica. Jim Chambers has .58.

Also questioning whether to go swamped or straight. My 54 fullstock Hawken has a straight barrel and its heavy.

So you boys who prefer "bigger balls"....please speak up with your experienced comments. Thanks.

This an easy one. Go for the 58 cuz that is what U want! Parts: Pecatonica will get you a blank, lock, butt plate and trigger guard. Rice can get U a swamped barrel. (Swamped is sooooo much classier and you are pointing out straight is heavy) Make the rest. If you can do wire inlay, U can make your parts too.
Tell us what U decide.

Once you try a swamped barrel you will never go back to straight. Get one from wherever you can find it. Anything custom made will take at least a year to arrive. Seems like all parts are tough to find now. You will probably have to buy from a bunch of different suppliers. Lancaster parts are common so it should not be too hard.

The Isaac Haines that I'm finishing up has a 38" Swamped .54 and I'm liking the way it hangs. Cant wait to shoot it. With a .58 barrel, it seems the wall thickness at the waist is getting kinda thin. I guess I have to trust the makers to know what they are doing.
