Don't know if this subject was covered before, but here's a couple of Maxis recovered from two deer I shot. One is a Buffalo 425gr.hp,hb, the other is a Hornady with the same build. Both deer dropped on the spot.
Shot with T/C WMC in .54, 85gr.fffg.Goex.

top left performed well! bottom looks to have hit bone maybe?
good expansion and bullet weight retention.

Yep, second one was shot downhill (I was on a ledge). Went through on an angle and ended up in bone on opposite front leg.

Wow that one flattened out completely, almosts looks like a picture of a big tree on it, that's amazing.

quick question, were these shots at very close range, 40yrds or less.
:hatsoff:

I have noticed at close range with a hunting load and bullet speed upwards of 1800fps eather roundball or an all lead bullet, expansion is huge at close range, as your game get further away around 60 yrds to 100 yrds your bullet has slowed enough to where you get penitration without expansion, I like that, I like it when my PRB double lungs a elk and keep right on truckin'
Last fall I had a muzzleloading elk and deer tag. I was teaching a friend how to hunt and he also had the same two tags. After a couple of days hunting elk in the high country we decided to take a break and hunt our does in the vally floor. We had been watching a group of deer right out side our camp. we put the stalk on them and got within 30 yrds. my buddy was using my 50 cal with 90grns of ffg and a PRB and I was shooting a 54 with 110grns of ffg and a PRB he shot and his doe droped, the other deer spooked but a suicidal one curcled back and I took her at about 40yrds. We both recovered our roundballs flattened out tucked into the hide on the opposite side :hmm:
I weighed each ball. aside from being completly flattened out they held 100 percent of their weight.
This is not the first time I have seen this, That is why I am fanatical about doublelung shots. I don't know if an all lead projectial can penitrate an elk leg at close range.
Two fall ago I shot a elk at a 100yrds. 50 cal 100 grns of ffg. I had a great off hand rested between a tree croch shot so I took it. I diden't take the wind into account and my ball drifted six inches foward and went through her sholder blade ( not leg bone) and doublelunged her
I recovered that ball as well, not a scratch and full weight rentention.
welcome to the wonderful world of pure lead
:hatsoff:

I know I'm being picky picky and splitting hairs here, but technicaly these are not Maxis.

Do you have any chrono data on these loads? Must have been movin along right smartly to expand that much!

Very interesting pics, thanks for putting them up.
