After buying an inline and only firing it a very few times, I realized that wasn't the experience I was looking for. So about 11 years ago I bought a traditional Hawken. Last month I made the ultimate jump to a flinter. I now have a Lyman Great Plains but I am not very satisfied with the finish of the wood. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get a more appropirate finish??
Thanks

Remove the blueing from the steel, polish and then brown.
Strip the finish, being very careful where wood meets metal, so you won't have gaps and steps.Polish with 000 steel wool, untill all scratches are removed, always working with the grain.
For stain, there are many choices, for a more traditional color dissolve a small amount of tar in paint thinner, then add to boiled linseed oil.Apply to wood slowly till you get the color you want.
Then apply thin coats of " Casey " stock finish, hand rubbed for best effect. It will take about ten coats at least, to get a better finish. Only put a drop or two, and rub it in. You will get an outstanding finish.
You can drawfile the stamped wording off the barrel, but that will be a challange not to change the octagonal character of the barrel.
Best Regards. Old Ford
