Hello all,

does anyone have experiences concerning rehardening a sear from a Davis lock (their Ketland, that is)? Is it an oil hardening steel? Do you recommend using Kasenit on the part? How hight do I temper? Any info will help..

It is likely oil hardening. Heat to a red orange in very dim light, quench in transmission fluid that has been warmed to about 125o. File check for hardness. If your file skips off it without cutting, it is good. Temper in your oven for one hour at about 425o. Do not trust your oven setting, they are seldom right, use an oven thermometer. If the part did not get hard, try again. If it stiil did not get hard, try again and quench in water. If it yet does not get hard then it is time for Kasenit.
