Years ago I inherited an 1858 Remington made by Palmetto armory. Heaven knows how old it is. As you can see, it is a brass frame. I want to replace the barrel (and loading lever) and need to find out a few things such as:
Where can I find a barrel?
Is the thread size going to be an issue?
Does anyone have any tips or tricks to doing this?
Any and all (non sarcastic) help would be very much appreciated.

Finding a barrel in the first place might be an issue. I've no idea what thread they used, it's possible a Uberti barrel might fit but I don't know for sure that they will. Gun Parts Co. (Numrich) lists Uberti barrels available for @ $150 used/$198 new. Haven't checked Dixie but they might have some as well. The loading lever doesn't seem to vary much between brands but if a Uberti barrel fits a Uberti lever should as well.

Changing a solid frame revolver barrel can be a tough job and really requires a proper receiver wrench to avoid damaging the frame. Many years ago I did one (a cartridge revolver but the job is the same) with a hardwood block cut and shaped to fit the frame which worked and didn't damage anything. But the risk is always there. Being a brass frame it might unscrew easier than a steel frame but it also might warp easier as well.

For the cost and effort I would think you might be ahead to just customize this one into an "Avenging Angel" type snubby and just buy a full size model if that's what you want. Your money, your choice.

A Uberti or Pietta barrel might fit and then it might not or require so much gunsmith work that the cost would FAR exceed the gun's value. You can use a chunk of wood to turn the frame off the barrel with a steel gun but I would not try that with a brass one. I'd strongly suggest buying a new one for $300.
