Have just acquired an Model 1841 with a beautiful browned barrel and need to remove the original nipple( stuck) and do some stock repair and reinforcement behind the tail of the tang.

What is the best procedure to remove the brass bands without marking the original browning on the barrel?

You're going to tap the bands off carefully, using a rubber or wooden mallet. Once the bands are off, polish any roughness from the edges before carefully re-installing them. My Euroarms Mississippi is 15 years old & the browning is still unscathed.
