I'll be very surprised if you don't like a Flintlock.

PS:
If your Hawken is a 1" barreled .54/.58cal, the Renegade 1" .50cal barrel should drop right into the Hawken, and unless manufacturing tolerances are way off between the Hawken and the Renegade, the Flint lock assembly should drop into the Hawken as well.

my hawkens is a 45 cal. would be sweet if that would work
Too bad...the .45/.50cal Hawken barrel is slightly smaller at 15/16".

It would be best if you could shoulder a Renegade before you buy it...if you're a big guy you may find a Renegade too small for you compared to the Hawken.

I prefer the Hawken model but the Renegade is pretty nice, too. There is no way you are going to get hurt at $200 bucks. But check out the obvious!
It is a good idea to install the new style cock, if not already on it. It will shoot with anybodies flintlock.

boker to answwer your question!!!!!! Dont know first hand as I have never owned a flinter how ever I have read and been shown, on the range and the field, by those that do,,the flinter takes some getting use to,delay in ignition, slight but different than cappers, smoke and fire right in your face, weather, knapping the flint, frizzen adjustment, priming powder placement.
All that said,,,go for it,,just gives you more reason to go shooting and that isnt a bad thing.
Just come across a T/C Hawkin in 50 cal with both flint/Cap barrel and lock, one stock, as a set.Never been fired.I figure for the $300.00 why not,,the wife just ask "Why not now."Got to love a wife who hunts BP/archery and knows more about cat holes than micro waves.

I have one ,the hunter model (SINGLE TRIGER).50 cal ,the stock is shorter but fits well with heavy hunting coat.

One thing I have to disagree with is the slow igination. I have three flintlock rifles. One is a Renegade. A properly tuned flintlock is capable of firing quicker than a caplock. The reason is a caplock will not fire until the hammer hits the cap and sets it off. The flintlock is throwing sparks and opening the frizzen on the way down and it is certainly possible to fire before the cock is reached it's full travel. I attended the Virginia Commenwealth Games and the Flint guys were beating the caplock guys (and girls). Maybe the flintlock guys where more experienced, but that's where I found out how to make a flintlock igination fast. You can use sawn flints and learn on them. They are consistant in the way they are cut and can be sharpened with a diamond file. Read the information on this web sight and a flintlock will be a wonderful experience.

Amen...sold every caplock I owned and use Flintlocks exclusively...learn about them and ignition is very fast, essentially a single event

rounball is correct in his assessment (“... ignition is very fast ...) but there is no way a flintlock beats a cap lock. There are published, exhaustive, timing tests to prove that.

Buy it, and within a year you will be selling those cap locks, to buy more flints. Too much fun with your clothes on. P.S. you do't want to shoot a flintlock naked, for a number of reasons :)

Well I'll have to eat my words, and say you are right about a caplock being faster than a flintlock. I was just saying I thought in my mind it might be possible, but technical documentation shows otherwise. I meant the Flintlock, guys were out shooting the caplock guys, and girls. I meant scoring better. There weren't many competitors and I think the two flintlock guys, may have been more experienced. My son-in-law says that my flintlocks "sound" the same as my caplocks, however my flinlock is probably more accurate due to length of barrel,...a round ball barrel, and it is a high end barrel.
