I have a T/C with a stock front sight that is really thick. I was wondering if anyone ever filed theirs down thinner and shorter or if some one knows of a thinner shorter front sight that can be used as a replacement.

There are a lot of companies selling front sights, in all shapes, sizes. Its a standard 3/8 dovetail

Don’t ruin the factory partridge sights as they are great big game low light sights. Some models of T/C,s had the smaller bead type front and rear. As 8 Bore says it’s a .375 dovetail.

Track of the wolf has a bunch of variations to replace your front sight. As we were discussing recently, the California sight they carry is a good choice as far as I am concerned. You can get replacement sights in various widths like 1/8", 1/10" etc...and it's a snap to replace one normally.

You must be a young man. If you file that sight and keep that rifle there will probably come a day when you will need to ask if there is any way to un-file it because your old eyes can no longer see it.

dragnetbill, I am 55 but still have 20/15 vision!! Just the dang thing covers the whole target. I really appreciate all of your guys help.

That's the reason a lot of target shooters use the "6 o'clock hold" with their guns.

By holding just on the bottom of a bullseye, it remains easily seen and if your out hunting all you have to do is to remember the shot will actually hit a few inches above the point of aim. It's pretty easy when you stop and think about it. :)

Have you shot the gun with the current sights? The six o’clock hold that Zonie referenced works well at the range and on game. Personally, find finer/thinner sights work ok at the range, but only with peep sights - and yes, I am older than you. With open sights find that the partridge style with a wide front sight (.100”) work best for me.

Best suggestion, order a couple of front sights and try them. You will likely have your answer before you leave the house. It is pretty obvious when you find a sight setup that is going to work. Recently got new eyeglass prescription. Find different sight setups work with new and old prescription. And not just with open sights. Even notice with sights that have glass in them.

Dragnetbill, its a curse it just means I can see how the rest of me has fallen apart. LOL

I've generally found over the years, that I have better results with a little thicker front sight and not one of the really skinny ones. Having a thicker front allows your peripheral vision a much better chance to align the top of the front and rear sights for consistent elevation.

Lots of advice already. To answer the first part of your question: My first percussion in the 70s was a good old TC Hawken. I hated the larger than blade rod shape on top. It was real easy to file it down. Make sure you protect your barrel and then just file it down. It is easy, but make sure that is what you want to do. That choice my friend is all yours.
That gun is still a fine shooter.
